Title: whats your favorite emulsion and what type of exposure unit you use
Post by: sweetts on December 06, 2011, 08:03:55 AM
I dont know if this was asked before but what are you guys using for emulsion and what type of exposure unit do you have?  Maybe tell whats the pros and cons of what use as you see it.

Right now I am digging Aquasol HVP for emulsion.

I also like Image Technology ITX, although that breaks down almost instantly with discharge or plasticharge.

I run a Nuarc 40-1K unit.  I am looking to upgrade to a unit with the glass on the bottom.

Emulsion is ChromaBlue pure photopolymer and exposure unit is Nuarc 40-1K Mercury bulb 1000w.
It takes about 2 minutes per screen (I have never measured the time, it has light integrator. It might be a bit more or less than 2 min). No issues with washing out, decent detail, 2 year shelf life, blue in color (do not like the look of pinkish emulsions).
I have a bit of the emulsion left and I will be switching to ImageMate PC 701, it is almost the same emulsion (per people at Chromaline, they make it) with a slight faster exposure times and a better price at my supplier.

The Aquasol HVP really is a great product.. How are you finding that it works with discharge and waterbase?

Ulano RLX, Douthitt Magic 83. 305-230 exposure in 18 seconds. 156-110 exposure 27 seconds.
Great resolution- If you can put it on a film, I can make it come out on a screen. I have used some
screens for repeat jobs for years and have done up to 15,000 impressions without breakdown.

Not very well haha.  I can get 50-75 pieces before things go south fast.  But that's me printing alone with a bit of down time if customers walk in.

I use Aquasol HV (blue not P pink) with Olec AL53 5k watt light source.  Times for yellow mesh are around 21 light units and between 11-17 for white mesh which is pretty close to seconds.

It's recommended that you use hardeners with it for waterbase and discharge. Did you try that?

Saati HU42 with a Violux 5000S lamp and wall mount 50 x 60 vacuum frame. We were using Mirakami's Aquasol for a few months, but didn't like the lack of latitude with our strong light source.

At the very least, I post harden that particular emulsion, when I use it for the hybrid Plasticharge from Wilflex.

My new everyday emulsion is CCI Prochem PFX-HV.

Haven't tried a hardener yet as it hasn't been necessary for me for the short runs I do with wb stuff.   I'd like to try the non permanent hardener, which one is that A or B?  Where do you guys buy hardener?  How hard is the reclaim?

Sbrem, what do you mean by lack of latitude?  You mean it exposes too quickly?

Throw some hardener on the print side and you will be good for 10 times that amount. I have not had any breakdown issues yet using the hardener.

I was using Ulano Proclaim Emulsion up to about 6 months ago and switch to the Chromaline ChromaBlue i like the chroma blue alot better.    i have 2 500 watt bulbs,   the exposure unit will be my next investment.  right now i burn them for 4 minutes.

Chromablue for 156 and up, Saati PHW Red for 83-140 mesh.  The saati serves two purposes, it is much easier to see through when using our PFU and lining up film, plus it's viscosity and high solids content allows thick stencils to be made with ease.

Ulano ez film (45 micron capillary film)
Nuarc MSP3140

I know cap film isn't the popular choice, but I love it. Screens are coated wet after reclaim, put in the drying cabinet, and ready for re-use.

Ulano RLX  very forgiving emulsion, can coat in daylight without killing the stencil. Hold halftones impeccably and is a good all around strong stencil.

Only downside is , burn time is a bit longer than most yet with a good exposure unit, you will not notice the time difference that much.

NuArc exposure unit

I'm using Chromablue only now.  I was using Chromablue and Ulano LX680 for detail work, but I'm getting good enough results with the Chromablue, I don't see a need for the LX680 anymore.

Nuarc 3140 Exposure unit.

I use Aquasol HV (blue), I use a Workhorse photosharp exposure unit (1000K) My screens are around 7 to 12 OEM depending on mesh. My exposure times are 18 to 25 seconds.

was using Ulano RLX but switched to a one part that has Freedom Image on it ( thier brand) for the same or maybe a little cheaper and its a one part. As for the table I have an old Plate maker turned upside down and a box with sides and glass top for the light table, 1k. I have about $75 in the unit and could not be happier :)

MS Hardener would probably be what you want, it's designed for shorter runs and is more forgiving. The A&B Hardener is more for screens that are stored and used over and over without reclaiming.

Forgot our exposure unit, Richmond Screenmaker 4358 with 10K watt metal halide with light integrator.  I don't know our exposure times, we work strictly off of light units.  110 with a 100 micron EOM on yellow mesh with the Saati is about 10 light units but we are talking about a pretty thick layer of emulsion.  305 with a 15 micron EOM is 2 light units.  If I had to guess, each light unit is about 10-15 seconds.

I'm using image mate photopolymer for my plastiosol screens.(made by chromaline and is similar to chromablue with higher solids and faster exposure time) and I use dirasol from sericol for my waterbase/discharge screens. The dirasol is by far the best water resist emulsion i have ever used.

Using Ulano QX-1. It is a presensitized dual cure hybrid.  It is my favorite because it reclaims easily even if under exposed. If your emulsion is giving you problems in the reclaim room you might want to find one that does not.

We have two exposure units, both Nuarcs, an MSP 3140 and the Tri-Light 3kW.

Kiwo Polycol Crossover for everyday stuff and One Coat for waterbase/discharge.  MSP 3140 exposure unit.

another nuarc 3140 here and another Aquasolv HV user. It is my understanding that we could get better results with other emulsions, but its versatility is making it hard to switch.

Or you may want to try exposing it properly.
Theirs no excuse for underexposure as it leads to an assortment of problems, one of them being difficult reclaim.

I measured the time needed to expose 155W and 230Y screens last nigh. 155W was 90 seconds and 230Y was around a 100 with my 1000W Mercury exposure unit and Chromablue. That should be slightly improved when I switch to PC701. 230Y had a halftone design with 50 lines/inch and 22.5 angle and washed out with no issues (no dots dropping off)

No need for me to under expose because of poor dmax values, we have a cts unit.
