Post by: inkbrigade on March 30, 2017, 05:15:34 PM
We are a small-ish but growing screen printing shop with a reputation for high quality prints, on time delivery, and superior customer service looking for a highly skilled Production Manager to oversee the production crew at our textile screen printing shop in Portland, OR.

We run 2 M&R autos and 1 M&R manual. You must have experience working with automatic screen printing presses, preferably M&R. Must have advanced printing experience with the many varieties of cloth textiles that come through our shop. We want a print nerd that will eat, sleep and breath this job. You need to be a very dedicated to providing the top notch quality prints that our clients have come to expect from us. This is a Monday- Friday 8:30am-5pm job however, as production manager if jobs require additional hours or weekend shifts you will be expected to do what it takes to get the job done.

This position will entail job scheduling, meeting production deadlines, approving jobs, working with the sales team to ensure customer expectations are met, managing all aspects of production flow including screen room, press operation, ink area, quality control, ensuring jobs are pulled and packed to spec, holding weekly production meetings, trouble shooting, implementing systems/techniques to increase productivity, etc. You will be carrying out supervisory responsibilities including; training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

We are not a large shop, currently we have 10 employees. This means you would be expected to hop in and get your hands dirty as needed which would include but would not be limited to operating the presses, mixing ink, registering jobs, counting, stacking, boxing jobs etc. basically whatever it takes to get the jobs done and out the door efficiently.

You need to be an excellent verbal communicator at all levels and with different sizes of audiences. Have the ability to reason and make sound judgement calls. You must be able to manage conflict through assertive and decisive behavior while maintaining composure in difficult situations. We need someone that can stay cool, calm and collected while managing a fast paced environment and who treats our employees with the respect they deserve. We are looking for a leader (someone that teaches and leads by example), not a "boss".

I would be lucky to find a press operator for 40k a year considering the overtime. This is in SC.

$40k. That sounds so low to me, but I'm in OZ. I understand we are talking chalk and cheese but my press operators are on 50-60k.(AUD) Thats a 38 hour week, no other responsibilities. Any overtime is time and a half. It's a scary wage payday down under.

Current currency values puts one U.S. dollar $1 worth $1.32 Australian dollars.

So, 40k = 53k Australia.

40k = about $19.25 an hour, so, $25.50 an hour Australian.

How big is your actual shop?

Fairly small shop I guess. We have 3 autos and 15 full time staff at the moment. We just laid off 2 casuals as we move into the colder months.
Like I said, it's chalk and cheese. Impossible to compare really. Happy to share some more details though. It's interesting.

My second best printer is on $60k(AUD). He is a press operator, not a production manager.
I have no idea how you pay your guys in the States but annually he also gets 4 weeks paid leave, 2 weeks paid sick leave and we pay another 9% of his wage in compulsory superannuation. Thats a 38 hour week. Any overtime is time and a half.

So is $19 an hour for a production manager standard?

It seams quite low to me.

Poor Jamie here is just trying to hire someone and we go and do this.

Aside from exchange rate, there's also cost of living. I'm going to guess that many things
are significantly more expensive down there, being an island and all.

My bro lived in NZ and a litre of petrol was so expensive people fished from jet skis!

It is true though that classifieds are not really the place to question high or low prices relative to location.
Sounds like a great topic of its own though for the Running a Business section.

I agree Andy, let's steer the thread back to it's original reason for posting. They are looking for a Production Manager in a nice shop in OR.

Since there was some activity on this post I thought I'd give an update.  We hired one of the guys we interviewed and I think he'll be a great fit!  11 years experience screen printing and a handful of years managing employees.  He's worked at a larger faster paced shop then ours as well as a smaller shop so I think he'll have a decent amount of experience to bring into the shop.

All of that being said, when it comes to pay, for small shops in our area I'd like to think we are fairly comparable wage wise though I can't say for certain. I know for Press Operators that we hire we tend to pay more than we see a lot (not all) of local shops paying. I also know that the person we are hiring for this position is getting somewhat decent pay bump from where he is at now if that says anything.  In our shop a lot of the "Production Manager" work still falls on my shoulders and I expect it to, our business is not at a place yet where we can afford a person that has the experience level of Dave at Bimm Ridder (although that would be AWESOME! ;). What we're hoping for at the pay we are offering is someone that is more of an entry level Production Manager if you will.  Someone that can bring knowledge to the table, help us improve and grow which then in turn affords us the ability to improve salaries etc.

- This is Jen by the way (Jamie's wife), I'm going to create my own account on here soon as to not cause too much identity confusion, don't worry Jamie is still around!

Lol, I tell people all the time that I'm the owner but she's the boss.
