Long story short, getting ROQs. A small YOU and a larger ECO. 'should be here next month.
Why ROQ? Many will think there is some sophisticated discombobulated formula behind the decision, but it was just the opposite. I asked one question only, "What press will make us the most money over the next three-four years?" And the answer was ROQ! This is not to knock down the other manufacturers as many of them have fantastic product, but there is just a slight edge with the green presses. How slight, one might ask. In my eyes less than 5% and possibly as low as 1%. The problem is, for us that 1% performance lag is hundreds of dollars in labor every month and with two presses it could be $1K! 5% in performance could mean $5K left on the table EVERY MONTH. Such is the world of contract sreenprinting. Those are some serious numbers and are hard to ignore.
So what did we look at?
Peter Walsh (M&R) was very helpful coming up with a deal that makes sense and we looked at getting two Sportsmans. This would have been our second choice after the ROQs. We were very close to going that route, the main thing in the way was that minor lag in production I already mentioned. The value for the money was a little better with the ROQ, too; even though they were just a little bit more expensive.
MHM makes a nice press, and I still believe the best engineered press on the market, but dealing with MHM directly I never got the satisfaction to our issue with the bent main shaft. Add the fact that pin system we tried to make work with the CTS is just not working as well as three point setup from ROQ and they were out of the running. Again, fine press, but my expectations are for the ROQs to produce at least 10% more in a day and 20% (compared to our old press) would not surprise me!
In the end, ROQ team really bent over backwards to get our business. I had serious reservations about dealing with Ryonet as, just as many others here, I perceived them to be catering to the garage printers only. It turns out things have changed. They have hired some top talent from big, big, big companies and start tackling the real movers and shakers in the industry. Shops with 30 autos are switching over and these are not the guys to suffer fools lightly. Jeffrey, my point of contact at RYO has Private Equity background and gets the business on the whole different level. It was refreshing to have a conversation with somebody who does not need an explanation of what a discounted cash flow means. We needed two presses and could not really afford two fully loaded ECOs. Jefferey worked on finding a deal that would work for cost and the production requirements. It involved getting a little creative (while all the other manufacturers we getting creative, Jeffrey "The Energizer Bunny" would not quit until we found a configuration that worked for both of us.) We are getting a demo 8/12 ECO XL and a 4/8 YOU. ECO is a beast that will print fast and is actually bigger than we needed, but it was available and they were motivated to move it. As a consequence we can print 30"x40" images! (did not order the hardware for that as I don't anticipate needing it, but hey it's nice to know we can if need be). ECO was important as we run over 1,000/hour every day at least for an hour and we needed a press that can do that. We are often at 1,100 per hour with tables lifting up and down so my guess is we'll be printing 1,200 almost daily now that there is one less motion with the platens. Again, this translates into an extra 0.5-1% per day. 4/8 YOU with 4 heads (cost savings measure) will have 2 slots for flashes, so it will be a true 4 color press which covers about 60-70% of our work. This press is an absolutely incredible value for the money and in my opinion the best deal on the market for entry level equipment. We picked up a whole slew of ancillary equipment to speed up the production, including ROQ Cool (cooling attachments), 3 digital flashes (temp controlled rather then time), ROQ Press hot Iron and few other smaller extras.
After my previous post, there was some grumbling about their support system via PM's and I spent almost an hour on the phone with one of the board members that had some issues to report. I expected there was going to be somebody with a problem, there always is. No company is perfect. My thinking was also that RYO is going through some growing pains and that was the cause of it. I reached out to Jeffrey without knowing, but fully expecting them to fess up and pony up to get the issue sorted and that is exactly what happened. The words out of his month were "We need to not only fix this, but also make it right!". I asked for a free set of youth platens (for the board member, not us, obviously) to help make up for the problem and without a hesitation the answer was "Consider it done!". It is the attitude we have with out customers that was extended by RYO. No BS, we will do what needs to be done. Period.
The idea that ROQ is on a serious ramp up with innovation was a bonus. Just to be clear, we bought ROQ presses because of what they can do today, right now, not what they might be doing tomorrow. I have been thoroughly disappointed by lack of delivery on the promises before (personally and professionally), so any such discussion does not carry as much weight as anticipated. But, just like discounted cash flow, it is a factor and it influenced our decision. Imagine having a press that prints faster as it gets older. What a concept! How about this? You come to work in the morning and your press can do something it could not do the night before (like half index for example). This is what MHM used to be, the market leader in out of the box thinking. Now, ROQ has taken over!

Congrats! Just happy to another dude like me making money!
-
Congrats!
We have had out 12/16 YOU XL for 2 years now and have had zero downtime. You won't be disappointed! When we move to a larger building, which based on recent events may be much sooner rather than later, we will be adding another YOU and a dryer.
-
Got my eye on the 4/8 you, hopefully business picks up and could get one of those bad boys.
-
Congratulations, you won't be disappointed.
I take it this means the MHM is going bye bye?
I can't wait until we can do the same. Beautiful solid machines that they are they
just can't compete with green.

thanx!
Actually we are going to keep the MHM for now and have it as a standby press. This will allow us to take on the rush orders and hot market type stuff without impeding the daily production. We have three printers so feeding the presses will not be a problem. Eventually we'll replace the MHM with another 8/10, I am guessing a year or so down the road.
pierre
p.s. I will need the info on using the ROQs with the MHM screens as you mentioned!

Got it. Nice, a jump from 1 to 3 machines is awesome.
I'm gonna bet that with the cups as opposed to pins you won't have to change anything on the
reg. pallet. The issue with Newman pins is that they ride above the stop blocks, but I'm pretty
sure the cups are larger in diameter and won't be an issue.
Either way I'm here if you need it.

we do have a handful of newmans, too. so all we'll have to do is make the blocks taller? That should be easy.
Also, we've been printing on the manual every day this year so all that work will shift to the small auto and fill it up to about 50%. With yearly growth of 20% the small press will fill up fast. We'll keep the staffing as it is for now and as we get more work we'll add another puller or two to the team.

were you able to get the roq cool? we were told it's not in the US!

I ordered it and was told we'd get it. Nothing was said about any delays, but our presses are still a month away.
Did you get an ETA?
pierre
-
Eric, you might be thinking of the Roq Foggers. We use the roq cool here on our presses, and I know other guys that have ordered them in from portugal.
-
Congrats Pierre new equipment and growth is so exciting.
Looking at the rate of speed the Cooling Head and Ironing Head move in the video you will not be any where near 1100 units per hour.
Might want to go check out my instagram. Last year when we did hot market for the broncos we ran 1000 pcs an hour with both attachments going....
The iron will slow things down but the roq cool does not.

Congrats Pierre!
Let us know how you end up using the Roq 4 you. We really wanted to get one in here but not enough power available to run it.
Did you mean that 2x sportsman presses cost more than roqs? If that's the case I don't see how it was even a consideration. Sportsman EX’s maximum cycles per hour is 75 dozen per hour. 200-300pcs/hr drop sounds like a problem for your shop. Maybe an EXG can cycle faster? Was just curious on that part of the decision. Coming from a sportsman owner moving to roq, I think (I hope!) you made the right one for you shop.
-
while I was there, Danny was running a four color on triblends! with two flashes (two underbases) and the ROQCool at 963 per hour. Anything with an underbase at almost a K per hours is good with me! ;D

no, ROQs were more expensive. They are more inline with the Gauntlet III than with the Sportsmans. But even though they were more, I felt we were getting more value. Peter offered to make us the high speed versions that would print over K per hour, so the speed was not an issue. The YOU is about 1050, it's only the ECO that is a little bit faster than what they were offering.

Yep, we just turned one on it's side. I believe they have taller ones available though, I remember Kurtis
mentioning something.

When I was considering expanding and going with an auto, they sat on the top of my list. I am excited for you and can't wait to see them in action. Everything I have heard about their support is it's stellar I think you made a great choice.

Gotcha. I see the strength of the M&R machines more in their low cost and ability to hold value so I figured I had that backwards somehow.
-
Congrats!
I've always wondered why more companies don't offer presses like the 4YOU. It seems to make sense.
I know that a a true 4 color press with 2 flashes would serve nearly 90% of our daily business.
-
Pierre, just wanted to send out a note and say thank you, since we first met I have very much respected why and how you run Blue Moon and I am excited that you chose ROQ as your next presses! Look forward to continuing to build the relationships.

PS Thanks for inspiring Jeffrey to download audible and listen to some of the audio books I am always talking about :) He reads a lot but you can double up your learning and positive input that way so not sure what you said but thumbs up to that!

Great news brother!
I know you put a tremendous amount of thought and time into this decision.
Enjoy your new toys!

Congrats Pierre.
Will stop by to see them when they are up and running!
-
excellent P!
Might just be me but I am impressed with Ryonet, they seem to have stepped away from the "Yudu" mindset, that's awesome. I may give them another look for some supplies...
-
Congrats Pierre, the excitement of new gear us awesome.
-
I am in the same boat with Ryonet.
I hired a guy about 3 years ago that bought a silver press to print his band shirts(when I hired him he was trying to sell the press). They were definitely pushing to the home shop.
I am glad they are moving away from that mindset as well. I am going to check out their green galaxy emulsion they have. It looks really good.
Although I went to their site to get some press pricing and made the mistake of signing up for their daily emails. I really wanted a rep to email or call me so we could discuss what I am looking for(possibly)
-
This young group might be the next force in screen printing equipment, plus they listen, look and learn from everyone...Congrats P GO GREEN!

Sorry, not all of us... M&R has earned my business and will continue to do so.
Also, I still believe that the SRoque print head design sucks. Just about EVERY video I see, including those from Danny who calls me out, shows them printing with what I would consider more than optimal pressure... Those squeegees are far from straight up and down, and are bent over.
At the very least, I hope that M&R sees this, and starts to innovate themselves as well as lower the prices.
I'm also not really sure how Pierre is coming up with a 5% performance difference. I've personally seen the M&R presses indexing at 3000+pcs/hr, and I know for a fact that the print heads can be sped up just by modifing the VFDs, although that speed up is really not necessary.
Also, Ryonet's stuff is mainly rebranded from others, and portrayed as "THE BEST EVER!" .. when they know it sucks. Consider the relabeled IC ink garbage they've pushed for years.
(From Dan), I edited to remove a portion of one members comments at top that were quoted...that were unnecessary and non beneficial pro or con.

Can you please post videos and photos of the prints that you do?
Thanks

At least they can bend a squeegee instead of their pallet arms.

Change is a scary and hard thing for some to come to terms with (especially in an industry where one brand has reigned supreme for so long), and it's usually met with pushback, but that's the way the world turns.
Congrats on the new setup. You won't be disappointed.
-
Jason, I'd like to ask what about the print head do you think sucks? Roq builds many different style print heads so what is your beef with it? Here's a chopper style print head that is very similar to a workhorse/m&r chopper system.
-
I like everyone on here. Please let's not go this route. Have a good weekend!
-
The prints done on Roq's speak for themselves. This is another stupid Ford vs Chevy, Illustrator vs Corel, Standard vs Metric debate that goes nowhere except only to prove that some folks have very thin skin.
-
Not to add to the debate, but looking at the YOU 4/8 I noticed it has a print area of 17x23. Is that true? If it is, that's a HUGE benefit for such a "small" and "cheap" press. Seems everything else in that price range is closer to 16x18, and that really translates to more like 15x16. Can anyone chime in on that? I have to print a lot of stuff that is closer to 20" long.

Yeah we have done 24" tall prints on our little machine. As well as 24" wide spirit jerseys. Very versatile machine. True 4 colors with 2 flashes can cover the bulk of most shops jobs.
-
I don't see any debate here.
These are two different species of machines. Yes they both push ink through a screen with a blade but everything around that basic function is built up and engineered very differently on each type of press.
It's as much a matter of taste as anything else. I said a couple years back that I had finally decided what I wanted for our new machines: an S.roque base with an MHM top that was sold and serviced by M&R, haha. Oh and I'd like the Workhorse HMI on that please.
I could point out a list of things that "suck" about any of those press designs. And as far as service and support I could tell you wonderful and horrible stories.
There's no reason to bring a conversation like that into what should be a congratulatory thread. So congrats again Pierre, moving on up to 3 presses will be a beautiful thing for you shop.
-
Congrats!!
How big is your dryer to run that fast with 2 machines (or 3) ?
Do you guys run that fast with Waterbase and discharge?
Just curious really, I hope some day we can be making moves like that!
Congrats it must be very exciting!
-
There is some guy pushing ink through a gang of lawsons right now who's making so much money he's snorting coke off a hookers ass while his pet tiger is rolling in $100 bills.
He's happy. It's ok if we all pick different brands. It really is. As long as its not playtex.

it's 500K BTU Interchange MD-8 with 8 feet of heat. We run plastisol at 1,100 per hour every day and the dryer is keeping up with 8' of heat. I don't know that it can do much more, maybe 1,200. We are adding 4' of heat (up to 12') so that should increase our capacity to 1,800 plastisol per hour. Cut that in half for water based.
We will be printing on one machine at the time for the most part next 12 months or so. While one is being set up and torn down, the other press will be printing. Then switch. On a rare occasion we might have both running, hopefully it's plastisol and we can do 900/hour on each. The third press will be for sampling and times when we need to squeeze something in (like hot market) without impacting the daily production too much. In those cases we will suffer some bottlenecking at the dryer, but hey we are doing the best with the space we got.

Nice try but our Playtex which is not very old is around 700k impressions and still running like day one. We could toss it in the ocean for ballast and still have made our moneys worth of it and then some. Hell we originally bought a 6/8 and they upgraded us to a 8/10 for free, so it isn't as bad as you make it out to be.*

...and you don't have the sense of humor you should have ;) Some of you need to lighten up. Seriously.
-
I've had this conversations with Joe Clarke and disagree with him on what's the optimal pressure for printing on metal platens. The amount of pressure Danny used when I was at his shop is no different from what we are using now. I think he might be using single duro blades so they are bending more than anticipated (at least in the videos), but in the end, we can both run our presses at 1,000+ per hour and have both won our share of awards, so I am going to guess that the head design is not going to be a problem. If I though it was an issue, I would not have bought anything. let alone two presses!

There is some guy pushing ink through a gang of lawsons right now who's making so much money he's snorting coke off a hookers ass while his pet tiger is rolling in $100 bills.
He's happy. It's ok if we all pick different brands. It really is. As long as its not playtex.
Seriously.
I thought this was a reference to tampons and people getting "emotional" but now I'm so confused. Or not...

Big Blue seems to be losing traction with this group rapidly.... not so long ago many members were True Blue, then one by one started jumping ship even after getting free steak dinners... the green machine appears to be a disruptor for sure.
My ideal print shop.. has an 8 color sporty, 14 color GT3, a 16 color MHM 4000/5000 (modified for 3 point reg) and a massive ROQ oval.. because each machine has it's pros and cons to match a style of printing. If all you do is put on blinders and wave your favorite colored pom poms you limit yourself. I don't like limits, I like to exploit weaknesses and push the boundaries.
Index at 3k.. ok.. what's the actual hourly rate as humans still load machines and can't do that everyday all day.
As for the Ryonet hate... Don't get what people see wrong with them.. jealousy maybe.. it's a beautiful business model. Start small, support your custy and as you grow, they grow with you. Check out danny.. started with a manual press and Ryo supplies.. look where both of them are today.

Yeah Ryonet has definitely turned the corner. I tried some of their new ink and wasn't satisfied and wrote a 3 star review, less than 24 hours later I had an email and 2 phone calls, they wanted to come by and see what was up. Turned out it was my fault and I jumped the gun on the review but I was shocked at the quick response. Good on them! I wouldn't mind buying supplies from them but some of their prices are double and more than what I pay currently so it's hard to switch for me.

Everything is negotiable.

Congrats! Can the printheads on the roq4you be configured in any order you want? I imagine keeping station 2 and 5 open is the most common?

Wow guys. I leave for 3 days, 3 days and now all hell has broken loose! Looks like posts got deleted, which makes the whole thing hard to follow...
Sounds like the Lawson guys are doing blow off young ladies derrières(explains where their R& D funding went), big barney is Mr. Hoffman's new BFF, and Wilflex is filling their containers with Behr interior paint, everything when to shambles! From the looks of it I say we blame Darryl, always starting trouble that one! ;D
Congrats Pierre, sure is a step up from that XpresScreen setup you have going on now.... ;D

few posts got deleted by Dan as this was heading into a discussion about another manufacturer. This thread was about our new presses and our experiences.
Thank you for all the well wishing. I'll keep you posted as we install and start running. There is a lot of work to be done, new electric drops, 2nd compressor and more air lines, dryer upgrade and so on.

P, Glad to see that you will now have the capacity to handle the work more easily and now take on even more. Whatever the brand, It makes life easier and now you can grow.
As has always been, any person, can speak of their experiences with any product on here (always), be it good/bad, Pro/Anti. Just keep it polite/professional.

Psyched for you Pierre!

I have to say Ryonet is why I started printing, I won a training class in Arkansas and it changed my world. I have always felt they were never looked at as a serious contender in the industry yet I would say better than half the printers starting out in the last 5 years have utilized them in some fashion. From my own experiences their support has been the best I have received and was not printing on one of their presses when I called on them.for help. If the support they gave me is the same for ROQ I don't see how anyone can beat them in service. I love to see these guys finally getting the respect, I feel they have earned years ago.
