Title: Blackline filtration system
Post by: ericheartsu on June 07, 2016, 06:15:58 PM
Does anyone use the blackline filtration systems?

Haven't used the Blackline but I tried to save money by purchasing an off brand (which attempted to copy the Blackline) and it is a total piece of shiz.  So I'd highly recommend not doing what I did.  :D

I'm looking at the cci roll to roll unit.  Hydrokleen makes a super deluxe auto version but it's pricy.

We have it, about 2 years now, like it a lot. You must keep up with it on maintenance. Our state and town authorities are also very pleased with it...

We've had the older, white unit for a few years and really like it.  Haven't had any problems.

i want to clean up our ink cleaning station, and our emulsion cleaning station, and these look the most practical/easy to use.

I've tried these type things before, first with a home built, then with an official. they don't handle the heavy work flow. Now we use CCI Clearwater system. The bentonite clay that you put in the system creates actually crystal clear water, all contaminants in the dirty water from color to chems, emulsion, everything become encapsulated in the clay. You scoop/filter the clay out, let it dry into rocks and toss it in the dumpster. It's a pretty amazing thing to watch after a batch of dirty water is whipped up, the encapsulated clay floats to the top like oatmeal. To save on bag filters we use a big chef's mesh strainer to scoop out the bulk, then hit the valve and the rest goes through the 1 micron bag filters and boom, water that is probably 1 to 2 steps away from being drinking water, it's that clear.

For us, it's critical that the filtration system not need a lot of user maintenance.  Let your crew do their thing and not worry about effluent and changing bags, etc.and besides, if you have our crew they won't change it and you'll have sludgy water all over the place....  That's why I like the roll to roll idea.  The hydrokleen one automaticaly advances the roll media which is super smart.

Screenprint guy, did you try the roll to roll CCI one before moving to the Clearwater?  The Clearwater sounds dope but is overkill for us I believe, I thought it was designed for CA compliance?

Well, filtration systems by nature need a little attention, or they stop filtering, which is what I meant. It gets changed over maybe once a month when busy (250 screens a week) and takes maybe a half hour tops....

Our drawback is that our water has to go outside. Our crappers and sinks are on a septic tank and it's an epa violation to drain any of what we all have coming from reclaiming into a septic tank, not to mention over time the emulsion and ink will eventually cause issues in the drain field, so with that, we have to drain outside like you would your a/c unit, or some folks do with their washer machines at homes on septic tanks. We always drained into the sand, and then if a skin residue started to appear on top, roll it up and toss it out, but the land owner complained and made it mandatory that we only drain clear water so this system was perfect. I did try the roll media, it did pretty much the same thing as our home made set up that actually worked the best until we started using the clearwater set up. I had a catch basin that the bulk water collected in after going through a zurn catch, draining through 230 mesh, then pumped through a 50 micron and then a 5 micron filter. There was still color though and so we just had to nip it in the bud and shut the guy up by going the full route. I think our filter set up we made would have past any testing since there was literally no particulate, but the dude got so picky and whiney that I didn't want to hear it anymore. Now zero anything goes out besides clear water. Now that we've had it since Christmas, I would recommend it even though it's pricey. From what I was told by an area epa agent is that any business that exhausts anything through water whether sewer or direct outdoor drain will be held to higher standards and he also said, and this will be federal, that depending on how things have been done, companies can be held to past exhausting/draining, so I'd rather play it safe.  :D

we have a settling tank system that works quite well but you may want to look at something like this depending on what you are trying to accomplish...just a thought...and I like creating workaround stuff and "moosegoldburg" ways of making something simple difficult.

I have an update after checking with the screen guy, make that more like every 3 weeks, and depending on use, completely empty it and clean any sludge that found it's way to the bottom, maybe every 3 months for that. Also, there is a small filter that is cleaned every week, very easy to do...

ive been reading up on sand filters for a couple months now.

its quite the interesting process and for those that have easy access to raw materials can build a system that will last for months maybe a year maintenance free.

i can see the ink waste being the hardest to collect but think pea stone and possibly rashing rings could collect enough gunk to actually work.

what about the Ryonet S-Green system?
Looks pretty straight forward.  Any one have thoughts on this unit?

CCI Clear water filtration system, only one that actually gives you CLEAR water as the end result!!! Tried all these other things before, wasn't happy at all. This one is at least stainless, does the same as the others, will get you better than just a couple screens, but nothing tops the CCI Clearwater system with the bentonite clay flocking powder.

nice. so your line of thinking is the same as mine...

Would like to know your thoughts when you un-crate
and install. Anxious to get one in the mail.

We have the Blackline unit.  It works great but needs regular attention.  We go through filters pretty quickly; I suppose that's the point.
The Ryonet unit looks MUCH nicer.  It will be definitely be an option #1 when we look to add/upgrade/replace.

How pricey is the CCI Clearwater system? I couldn't find a unit that said anything about clay on the CCI website

Thanks John, looking good.  Our filtration system has never worked well and after watching the video for the Sgreen system, it looks to be built to last.

Are there any safeguards in place for if it gets clogged?  Also interested in the final two stages of filtration media, which I'm guessing are the standard cylinder type.  Are they the rolled paper ones which would need replacing from time to time or are they reusable?

Hmmm.  I home brewed one with 2 screens for filter stages, settling tank, then an outtake skims the top water out.  We initially put furnace filter type media on the top screen but that filled up with gunk immediately.  Both of our statiuc frame screens clog up pretty constantly as well.  I like the two bays on this and the wheels are slick but I'm not sure it would solve our issue of having to constantly scrape out the filter screens.

Does the blackline use static frames as well?

Let us know how this pans out over heavy use and time John.

We will clean all the screens two times a week. Even using a good  emulsion
remover like Easiwayin the dip tank  there is still build up on all three screens.
It will require some maintenance, and we are happy to do it.
Not that much work as compared to snaking out drainpipes packed with lint
and tape.  We are have placed an old 110 screen on top of the black screen that
you see in the photo that is easy to remove and catches larges particles, tape or anything similar.

there is a 20 micron and 75 micron cylinder filter. Paper.
Easily bought anywhere... Nice clean, filtered (almost potable water)
going down the drain now. Peace of mind.

For the money - this filtration system is a tank, and gets the job done.

John

Like you I had one built , approx 36"x22"x18",  I have the tank divided into 3 sections 1 large , 2 smaller then gravity into the drain, I have a large tray on top that is angled and sends the mess to the 1st settling area. it has a stainless screen with holes about 1/8" on top of that I also tried a furnace filter it didn't work great then I started buying rolls of batting about 1" thick that is used for furniture it worked well we cut pieces to fit the the tray, we also tried felt it worked really well for filtering and we ended up changing out about every 4 days , its a little expensive.  What we have ended up with is thick commercial landscape fabric, its cheap and we get 300 yard rolls cut to the width of the tray and switch out every 4 days it does a great job.
About every 4 months we pull the tank out from under the sink and let it settle over a long weekend then shop  vac off the clear water ( doesn't disturb the gunk) then scoop out the settled crud , about 2-3 five gallon pails every time then we let that settle some more and then have picked up for waste.

Just installed a new Blackline WDX and a Filter One. Great units, no brainer install. Put LED lamps behind the sink and a new LED fixture above the reclaim area. It's like an operating room in there now.
