Starting a thread for T3270 or T series users. Ours lands next week.
I'll start with a question for users- how does the Epson XD PK ink do for film positives? We like Chromaline's ink but if the Epson is ok could stick with it as well.
-
I never tested out there ink but friend and the flatstock industry just use the epson ink. We went with chromaline since we burn really long screens due to low mesh counts and high production runs. I would test the printer ink that the printer comes with but I remember the epson guy tell me it was just enough to load the printer for the 1st print. So I just plug in chormaline ink instead and am saving it for a rainy day if I run out of ink or a cart malfunctions.
-
I just bought one from filmsdirectonline.com - Bryan with 700ml 2 black 3 cleaning with filmmaker XL since I owned a previous version and love the darkness of the films better than my 4800. I have had it 1 week so far. Printed films today for the first time no problems and quicker than the 4800.
So far Love it.

A little more info I dug up yesterday:
You can run dye black for film in either the PK or MK slot and then, using the media settings in the driver, print with the other 4 carts for making signage etc. A RIP that is setup for color printing as well as film would probably be even more useful but according to Epson directly the media settings control which slots get used.
The T series allows you to command it to clean individual colors, i.e., just the Y channel. This is interesting and important because it make running another ink type much more feasible. We always loaded cleaning solution and a cart of dye black for film to avoid clogged heads and the gratuitous ink waste that happens during a cleaning but if you can clean just one part of the head this is less necessary.
Anyone know where to get just the cart chips for the T series? I need some in case we have to run Accuink cart in another head. I've found sets of refillable carts but not the chips alone.
-
We haven't had the need for this but this is what i found a while back. http://www.inkpro2day.com/chip-resetter-epson-surecolor-t-series-ink-cartridges/ (http://www.inkpro2day.com/chip-resetter-epson-surecolor-t-series-ink-cartridges/)
Accuink cart should be specif to the color you need so no chip re-setter needed unless your running carts. We found that we only need one black cart for printing from the rip to get awesome films.
-
Not sure if these are compatible with your specific model but I would give Ross a call because he has always been quite helpful.

I almost bought that set from the inkpro2day site but noticed really bad comments all over the place about the company accepting pmt and not shipping so didn't want to bother. I found a set on aliexpress along with a spare maint tank. I like to have a spare tank to swap out so printing isn't interrupted while we clean the absorbent pads inside.
Yes, I agree on one black, more just generates lower quality output and no need to reset an accuink chip, you want it to tell you when it's running low. But, if your PK head has issues, most rips will let you put the black cart in another head to keep printing. That's why I grabbed the refill cart set, so I can pop the PK chip out of the accuink and pop in whatever channel is needed. We're kinda out in the sticks so I like to have a good backup sop for when things inevitably break down.
Thanks 123, on the subject, anyone know if the carts/chips are compatible across the T series? I see the chip resetters sold for the T series are super expensive and different, wondering if the old 80 series resetters would work on these for the maint tank, etc.
-
One question I couldn't get a solid answer on is initial setup if using a dye ink in the PK slot. Is it OK to setup with the dye ink and run a head alignment or will the dye ink throw it off?
-

I actually did call Ross and the T3000 carts are the same on the T3270, etc. Ordered my refillables for cleaning solution from him as the alixepress ones were taking too long to ship. Thanks again for the reference.
Another tidbit on these printers, the maint tank chip needs it's own resetter, not the same as the ink carts.
-
What's up with the print speed on these? I read the specs but you know how those go. Are they as fast as they
say they are?
-
Personally I think with 2 blacks with filmmaker xl 50% quicker than 4800 with one black.

-
Anyone know where to find chips for this printer stateside? The carts I ordered came with chips that won't read on three of the carts and I haven't got a response yet on replacements. Really want to get this printer operating so looking to just source the chips and get on with it.
-
Check ebay if you need something fast.
-
No ink cart chips on ebay yet from what I could find.
Ross at inkjetcarts.us came through and got some in the mail to us to arrive Wed.
I also bought a set of backup chips off Aliexpress as backup.
-
How is everyone doing head alignments on this? Output was great at first and is now getting some artifacts, looks like it could be alignment but I'm not sure how to go about this with Accuink in the PK and cleaning solution in the rest.
-
Just wondering if you have a report on how the T3270 is fairing for film output. Our 4880 is still going strong but I want to have a game plan for when it decides to stop working since DTS is not really an option for us...unless prices come down drastically.
-
Its great. It was a big upgrade compared to our 1430 which runs all black and is a lot faster. Its a good choice.
-
I have one running 2 black rest cleaning carts so 3 700ml is what I picked. With cadlink and quick and produces nice prints. Very Happy. Carts and print I got from Filmdirect online, I emailed them and Brian and I word out a deal. I think until I need DTS this is the answer for now. My last printer lasted 10 years a 4800.
My thoughts.
Shane
-
Happy here. Resolution is on par with the 4800s it replaced. Much faster printer and cutting is scary fast v the overly dramatic 4800 cutter. Driver runs well with osx Yosemite and the control panel has most all of what you need which, in my opinion, sets this printer up for the long haul.
The only wrinkle I can't smooth out is the feed keeps moving around on me. I did the printer feed adjustment and also the rip but I'm seeing films off and on by a hair, doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

So I've hit wall with a T3270 + Accurip Black Pearl issue.
I'm getting films that are long or short without any pattern. Two films in a set will be correct, one is stretched lengthwise, etc. Major headache.
On the T3270 itself I did the paper feed adjust, detect paper thickness. In Accurip I did the feed length adjust calibration to enhanced matte paper.
Fixxons film.
Platen Gap: Narrow.
Roll Paper Tension: Normal
Paper Suction: 0
Going to start fiddling with the roll paper tension and also turning off "remove skew", whatever that is. Any advice appreciated.

try the film maker. If the problem persists, the issue is in the hardware. Otherwise it's the RIP. . .

What Pierre said.
I honestly am not sold on a software fix for a physical problem. We pre-un-roll our rolls and always have a few feet hanging.
Never an issue.
-
FM is no go for us sadly. After much troubleshooting, it seems the print from Mac to Windows was causing problems that aren't fixable. I heard that FM often can't be used with the mac workflow and that most go to Wasatch. Really tried hard with it, over many hours of setup though and it's absolutely superior to AR.
Unless the RIP is somehow adjusting the feed at random, I'm thining it must be the media and the way it is fed so I'm looking at those settings.
The T3270 doesn't really have anywhere I could un roll to/leave film hanging.

Good to know.
I know you'll hate it, but can you setup FM on a Windows print server and print to it from your Macs?

In the rip don't turn a different angles, so do print one film horizontal and the other at 90 degrees. they do shift. I use filmmaker and have had this if I do.

I did that. It was actually a very nice workflow cadlink had for this, but something gets buggy printing to the FM rip station from mac, I guess that's not uncommon. I can deal with a windows print server but I can't deal with actually reopening files in .ai on windows just to print, would kill too much time to justify it.

All our films print out the same way, no rotation or nesting although I do use the Nup abilities of AR, it's all in the same direction of output.

Yeah, no way in heck I would be doing that. Even to setup our workstation to print to the server in FM required
some hocus pocus, but it works consistently.
I think there's a hot folder option.

yeah I tried it all, hot folder a no go since the .ps files had other bugs. If anything will drive me to CTS it might be this incessant fiddling with film printers and rips.

hahaha, dammit! I actually don't mind fiddling but once I've fiddled I want the machines to repeat. Lack of repeatability in machines is what really chaps my balls.
-
So this is interesting. I printed (3) 17" long sheets out with just our reg marks top and bottom. Perfect alignment.
Printed a 3 color spot color job, (3) ≈18" long sheets. Films are way off in length.
Seems like the problem is happening when the printer is actually printing in the middle so now my suspicions are back onto the RIP not controlling the feed correctly while printing. I can't get anything to print in PK only out of the T3270 driver to confirm unfortunately.
Might just grab the wasatch trial and see if that fixes.
-
I have no problems but I am using windows... Also we register to reg marks vs film size since we are using a roll. Here is a quick thingI found on gig posters about printer settings a while back. http://www.gigposters.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160420&page=2&highlight=epson+printer (http://www.gigposters.com/forums/showthread.php?t=160420&page=2&highlight=epson+printer) Also we are not using the rip to output halftones since we make those in the files vs ripping tones with the rip. I would get a pc and try it that way and need be run films via pc.
Are you making a custom printer page for each new size of film output?

Uh, not totally following this. Use the PC for more advanced media settings you mean?

Well after a lengthy set of testing, to put it mildly, here's the solution:
Set the paper type to Heavyweight Polyester.
Big thanks to Charlie from Accurip for assisting on this. His T3270 outputted the file I was using for testing correctly, mine didn't. After careful comparison of settings, we found it was the paper type. I know a lot of folks were miffed about the upgrade thing with AR but I have to say that Charlie's support is worth every penny of that cost, he helped me troubleshoot an issue that was 100% printer related and had nothing to do with his RIP.
My assessment is this issue comes primarily from the roll feed tension in relation to how the paper is tractored through the printer. I could load sheets at my prior settings and eliminate the issue, for a case in point. I'll go out on a limb and guess that there is a setting in the Heavyweight Polyester paper type that I can't access or adjust via the menu options on the printer that made this all sync up finally.
Sorry for mucking up this thread with this issue, hope it helps someone down the road.

We constantly keep talking about the advantages of FM over AR, but not often enough it is said that AR works and it works well and that it's ease of use might carry more significance than the few additional features of the FM.
I think you should do a separate post so ppl know about his support.

For sure, FM had slightly better screening and deeper adjustments for droplet/density at 2880x resolutions but honestly it didn't do anything beyond that that AR cannot in terms of the final output quality. Linearization does play into this however since you need deep control over droplet/density to linearize at high resolution and is the only reason we would switch from AR.
AR reigns supreme for ease of use in a mac workflow and the new interface is very nice to boot. FM's failure to print from mac to pc without major file errors is why we had to give up on it.
I'll copy/paste some of this onto a fresh thread, I'm sure with drama about the $150 upgrade to follow, haha.

So we got a T3270 last week and so far I'm liking it but for some reason the ink will scratch right off of the films - with a fingernail, or if another film touches it, etc. Haven't had that problem with any film printer in the past. Anyone have any ideas?
Running accurip black pearl, 720 x 1440, droplet weight 11, matte black ink, same waterproof inkjet film we've always used.

Using the Epson Matte, i.e. pigment ink? I would guess that to be the problem. Dye ink gets in there much better than pigment in my experience. You might be able to resolve this with a different film that "fills up" with pigment ink a little more and/or adjusted settings.

I agree with Zoo what type ink aftermarket or epson. I haven't used oem ink I dont know how long 10 years aprox.
Shane
-
OEM Epson matte black. We've used both oem and aftermarket/dye ink in past Epsons (1400, 1430, 3880, 4900) and never had this issue before. The ink comes right off with the slightest touch.
-
I just tried scratching the ink off and nothing. Using the ink from filmdirectonline.com used for 10 years on 4800 and now the t series no problem. Using Ulano film or Midwest new own band film they are beta testing.
Try more ink or different film. What film being used? or Different rip to see if that helps.
Just suggestions.

Can someone answer this question for me regarding this printer:
Can I use this for my films and easily change back to printing color proofs without issue? I share my epson with another department and they output color proofs for clients.
I have been living off of a few settings I have adjusted on my current 7880. But I really need darker films.
Thanks for any insight on this.

We even get these issues on our 4880 at times. Especially on very tall artwork. What we do is we create crop marks that extend around the whole artwork. Apparently irregularities in film length is caused by areas in the artwork where there is no ink going down at all. The Epson printers skip these areas at times too fast and create these irregularities in length. Now having crop marks extend around the whole artwork will put ink down over the whole length of the printable document and avoid any skipping.

If you run the Film Positive package from Epson, then yes. That system uses Accurip + Epson Film + the OEM inks. I have not tested their film using the OEM inks but the film appears to be very high quality and should run will if they have this system dialed in.

This is correct.
To give an update, our printer is going back to Epson primarily due to this issue. You can partially resolve it by printing a very thin line in registration color right at the edge of the artboard, forcing the print head to travel across each film in it's entirety. Unfortunately, our issues appear to run deeper than the feed being off when the print head is not engaged. Even printing that line down all films, we cannot use the last 1/4-1/3 of each roll of film as the registration is still off around 1/8" lengthwise and the printer starts spattering dots making even 1 color work not an option at the end of the roll. Huge waste of film. Additionally, even when using the aforementioned line, if we print out a job and say need to replace a film from the job it will not line up to the prior printed films no matter where we are on the roll, even using a fresh roll. The issues repeat across all media including Epson's.
Despite a tech confirming the issue in the field and months of repetitive conversations with both Epson and Accurip Epson is maintaining that the printer has no hardware issue. Both myself and Charlie from Accurip did a lot of work to confirm that our unit has a hardware problem. We were also accidentally told by Epson tech services that it's a known issue on a number of units in the field and they are working on a firmware/hardware fix but they then reversed that saying it's not the case.
If Epson is right and the unit does not have a hardware issue then I would avoid these units for outputting film positives, whether you use the OEM Epson package or not.
If we are correct and our specific printer just has a hardware problem then I would exercise caution in purchasing this printer for film output. Epson has been extremely unprofessional in handling this, trying to weasel out of the warranty coverage and generally slacking off and dragging this out. I know others seem to be doing fine with theirs but it just might not be worth the potential hassle.
Outside of this I still feel this printer could be (have been) the perfect film output machine, sad that we can't keep ours.

We're 10 months in, no problems. We are still running the Epson Photo Black on pigment based film, as I don't want to mess with the warranty, but I will probably switch over to dye based, like we did on our former 4800, and the 3800 that took it's place (still running daily).

I’m happy with mine.
Using Accurip Black Pearl.
I had problems with the black UV Blocking dye We use in the 4880 drying up and I had to clean the black head all the time. Since I changed the black no problems.
I have it set up with one black for film and CYMK for Sublimation.
With the Sublimation the inks don’t dry fast enough when we cut each page so we switched the automatic cutter off and we manually cut at the end of the printing.

Our T3270 gets installed this week. Does anyone have any information on how we can wirelessly print to this printer? I know it does not have wireless connectivity but my question is...
Has anyone had any luck connecting the printer to a wireless bridge and then being able to print to it?
-
So we ended up having to purchase another one of these. Sad to report it has the same film length issues. It's not endemic to earlier models. If you are outputting art that has areas without data and the printer is feeding, check your films. Ours do not align.
The fix- 0.0001 pt line on the side of the film nearest the print head, aligned to that edge of artboard. We output "feet first" so that's a 0.0001pt line assigned to reg swatch aligned to right.
This forces the print head to travel it's min distance across the film and keeps the feed consistent.
It slows down the output but it's the only way.
I am going to reach out to the contact who bought back our prior unit a year ago and request that they update firmware/software for a "film" setting that forces the printer to feed at a set rate and not pass over open areas.

I'm sorry to hear this. We're not having any issues. We set the paper type to heavy polyester and we're running smooth as butter. No alignment issues with unprinted spaces in the design either. What is your workflow like? Maybe it's something you're not thinking of. I'm just thinking out loud....

It seems those with the cad link are not having problems. We have this printer and the cadlink filmmaker and have perfect registration.

We’re CDR/AI to Accurip to T3270
We also never print a design rotated to 90 degrees either, if that makes a difference. Printer bought standalone from B&H Photo. Accurip BP latest version. Paper type set to heavy polyester in printer setup.
I’d be happy to share anything else you want to know.
If you have a design that gives you grief, I’d be happy to output it at our place just to see. something has to be different.

Thanks to both of you. At this point I need to trial different rips- RTI resells a version of Harlequin and then the FilmMaker -and see if there is a difference, i.e., can the key line be removed?
Steve, I've done an incredibly thorough side by side with Charlie with AR when our first unit had this exact problem and we tried everything, down to loading identical film, and could not get one machine to repeat what ours was doing.
What film are all loading into these printers? Fixxons here. Trials of everything else exhibited the same issue in the past but just curious.

We are currently in trials with Accujet 17x100 from Chromaline. So far, we like it.
One point to note with our printer that seems weird but isn't causing an issue is that the head cables kind of tap the beam when the head is traversing back and forth. Only when the head travels so far away will it make the bump or tap noice. When the head only travels half way across the film, it doesn't come in contact with anything and there is no noise. This has not caused any issues but I wonder why Epson doesn't support those ink line better since they are always moving.
I would post a video if I knew how here.
Here is a photo of our paper settings on the printer.

So we're now seeing the registration issues now with the T3270. Adding the thin line to one side of the art board alleviates the issue but seems uncalled for in the normal course of business. This has to be related to the paper type/thickness and how the feed driver advances the paper between objects that print/don't print.
Has anyone received a good response from Epson or anyone else about a possible permanent fix for this. I would think a firmware update would do the trick.
I've reached out to ZooCity because he seems to be actively pursuing this issue so I will see what he says too.
-
Is anyone reading here besides Steve and myself experiencing the same issue? i.e., print cannot print same length films in normal printing, without imaging a thin line down the side.
If so please email me. I'm going to see if having a set of users might be enough to push epson to fix this, which I'm pretty sure they can with a firmware revision. Wishful thinking most likely but worth a shot.
You can hit the email button here.
Thanks!

Give the cadlink XL a try print all multi color same way usually vertical. I am running plain paper. Firmware DN016F5 . Running serial #U84E000844
Try plain paper see if that helps. Send me a 2 color file i will print it and see if it goes weird. I am running denco film like it so far 59.00 17x100.

I think we've narrowed the issue down to the printer and those of using Accurip probably don't want to move to another RIP. We want what we have to work and Epson needs to be called out to engineer the firmware to fix it.
With enough users voicing their complaints, Epson will fix the issue or face a class action against them. They sold a bill of goods and with Charlie at Accurip knowing there is an issue, they are bound to jump on this and fix it.
As mentioned earlier, they just simply need to add a media type that advances the un-printed areas of film like it is being printed. If you notice, those areas are quickly advanced through so that the printer reaches the next printable area in the image. I know it will slow the output a bit but that is a better option and one I think we all could live with knowing the plates will now line up properly.
Is there any chance Charlie Facini monitors this thread and can weigh in?
-
For those having reg problems and films being different lengths, are you use a 2" core or 3" core"? We had tons of issues with our 48xx and tried everything (there is an old thread around here some where). We changed to a 3" core and that solved our issues. Worth a try.
On a side note... some one I know just purchase one of these. Do the make refillable carts for these yet? I saw some but they said "one time use" and it didn't look like the chips could be reset.
-
3" core helps but does not solve. *all film should really be on a 3" core imo
Our current T3270 is 100% OEM, epson film, epson ink, accurip and the issue is still there.
If another rip works that would be telling but inconsequential since the printer doesn't ship with another rip, it ships with accurip. And yes, the issue probably goes away or diminishes significantly on reflective media. Clear media is always going to be trickier I imagine.
As shipped, these printers cannot line up films for screen printing positives.
Options are to have Epson take them back or try to get a resolve. I'm going for the latter because there's no other film printer that fills our needs on the market right now.
Yes, a couple places have the refill carts and resettable chips and waste tanks. I think I bought ours from inkjetcarts.us but can't exactly recall.

We have struggled with the same issue on our Epson 7900. Films misalign in the feed direction (Fixxons). I was able to adjust it via the film feed adjustment in accrip, but at the beginning and end of the roll we would still have misaligned films wiith the film feed adjustment maxed out in AR. It ended up being such a hassle to deal with so I put our older 7600 back into service. I haven't used the T3270, but it sounds like this could be an issue across several of the newer printers.

Anyone using T-Rip on this printer?

So the Cadlink RIP is providing films at same length?

Hi Everyone,
We have a T3270 Epson Screenprinter edition and I have a question....
We only ever use the PhotoBlack cartridge to print our vellums and never use the CMY or MatteBlack cartridge.
Is there a way to override the other ink cartridges so that the machine only uses the PhotoBlack?

if you do it will burn head up. use cleaning carts or ink to keep it from burning up.

when you are printing films, it doesn't use the other carts, just the photo black. However, when it "cleans" itself, it uses the others, it kind of has to. You can get other carts and fill them with cleaning fluid so it still does the job, but you aren't wasting expensive ink.

You can get refillable carts with resettable chips and fill the ones you aren't running with cleaning solution. There are also resettable chips for the maint tank.

Anyone else using this for dye sub. Ours has been a pain in the ass with the dye sub ink...wondering what we are doing wrong or if we have a lemon etc. Need the wide format, but would love a better dye sub option if there is one...
-
Not sure what dye sub is.
We use ours successfully for film and sublimation.
We have bulk cartridges that do not need resetting.
If I was only printing black I'd have two with black and 3 with cleaning liquid, in my 4880 I put in 30% window cleaner and 70% distilled water.
Some window cleaners are better than others, I'd cannot get the good ones so I use whatever is available.

dye sub = sublimation
Dye sublimation is often shortened to one of these terms

The F6200 would be the better option. Looks like a T series through and through but they limit the resolution(droplet size) to prevent clogs, etc. Our runs mostly fine and is user friendly. I'm not a fan of the Wasatch rip that comes with, great image configurations but annoying workflow and absurdly high cost support plan.
You could try better inks, epson's inks maybe and limiting your resolution to 720x720 or 720x1440.
-
I think we already use the Epson inks. Repairs have all been in warranty so far I believe. Not sure about the resolution, but I'll look into it.
