Title: How many colors would this take? (hands)
Post by: Gilligan on February 09, 2015, 07:00:12 PM
Here is another one of these "how many colors".

This is going on black and will have some white text.

I'm seeing 8 obvious colors (white, black and the colors of each hand).

Could these be done with some simulation of colors or is it a case of being so large of an area for each color it should be independent colors?

Hands down... ;D    this is an easy one for 4 color process (+ 2 whites) on darks.  Use white underbase. Print heavy, base like a 110, then flash, then print another high mesh white on top to smooth it out, Flash that. Then top colors YMCK.  Make sure the base is a smooth bright white base.

This art consist of process colors. Bright or leaning towards true process, so if you choose to go sim process, you might consider adding some neon to those pms spot colors.

Additional note.  If process + spots, then make the spots the purple and the green. Those are 2ndary colors and tend to shift in process color. Reds, come out fine.

Can definitely do this as cmyk.  Even though you have large areas, they are relatively even tones (color-wise) and all of the gradients will be determined by your base (use the black of the shirt instead of black ink) and highlight white.

I see it as CMYK w/2 whites, but I'd rather go 2 whites, 6 spots and black if I had my druthers... if money and equipment is not a factor.

Six color press (with flash back) is what we have in house... After that it gets sent to Alan.

Personally I'd shy away from CMYK on this. Base plus 6 colors minimum, add black and top white if you can.
Art is too "clean" for process IMO.

I looked at this post yesterday and thought about it for a while, and although I'm usually in the camp of less-is-more, there's 6 clearly defined, large areas of color identity in this art that needs to be considered.  Trying to cut this back using process color would be difficult to control, IMO.  Therefore, if I was printing it, I'd go with max colors so it matches the original.  Base, 6 top colors, highlight, black.   :'(

The toughest color would be that red yet with the right edits ymck should do just fine like DTDan mentioned.
