When you have a selection, go to Mask>Save>Save as Channel, it is saved as an Alpha channel.

When you have a selection, go to Mask>Save>Save as Channel, it is saved as an Alpha channel.

and at the bottom of the channels pallet, the 2nd icon from the left does the same, it's "save selection as channel"
