Title: Blank boxes? Where to buy?
Post by: IntegrityShirts on December 16, 2014, 09:27:09 AM
Uline? What about shipping costs to get them to me? What's the most common size you guys get? I'm open to two sizes, but prefer just one size. I don't do a lot of shipping, this is just for pick up orders usually between 25-100 pieces. Thanks!

Uline is definitely the big player, but I'd check around locally before ordering from them.  You can likely get close to the price and save on the shipping cost.

I get them here.
Local, I pick them up.

believe it or not ....look at Home Depot....

my new neighbor is a HUGE moving company, he showed me HD prices vs Uline, I was pleasantly surprised....

Sometimes www.Amazon.com (http://www.Amazon.com) has boxes at decent prices.....Especially if you need to have them shipped....But this seems to be hit and miss...

As far as Home Depot I would prefer blank versus boxes printed with their logo all over....

agreed. If you can find a local place and pick them up you save a ton of money on shipping.

Uline, Ebay, Amazon if you can't find a local place.

Our local place ships free, next day. Way cheaper than Uline.
We buy a pallet and print them if and when we have the time.
One of my more favorite things to do around here actually, breaks the monotony
of fabrics all day long...

If you foam your pallets for zips/seams, your box supplier probably carries the foam as well.

Nice, home depot does have decent prices. Free ship to store on 20x14x16 in bundles of 20 = 33.60 or $1.68 per box. Not bad! Going to try one other local place and see how they compare.

let us know how you make out, we're always looking for the best value in blank boxes...

I was thinking of custom tape too but man, THAT is expensive...
Title: Re: Blank boxes? Where to buy?

Funny you say custom tape Homer my wife had ask about doing custom tape instead of custom boxes, I think the tape is a waste because it get's tossed away and boxes get used for other thing's and still show your company logo... how many of you print your own boxes?

yeah your right D, BUT the presentation is nice...we print our own boxes about every other month. The last batch we printed, we took the bodek boxes and some box paint, the cover up stuff, and we recycled those. took more time than I planned on but they turned out pretty sharp.

we have printed boxes.  We are delivering a $10k order today and everything is in our boxes.  It's a great presentation and when the boxes are in the storage closet it's obvious where they came from and drives home loyalty.

Print our own, we do a lot of work with university student clubs and tech companies where the person
in charge of ordering seems to rotate on a yearly basis, so when the new guy gets told to order more shirts
because the box is empty he knows where to order from.

The company we buy boxes from outsources the printing of them and the minimums and setups are huge.
$700 a color and something like 7 million board feet minimum. Yeah.... no.
Title: Re: Blank boxes? Where to buy?
Post by: mk162 on December 17, 2014, 12:58:10 PM
say what?  the setup for us is $400(one time) and small boxes 16x12x12 are about $.80 each and the larger double walled ones 22x14x16 are about $2.

I order usually 1000 of each at a time, but the small ones aren't going as fast this go around so I'll probably just get 1000 bigguns next order.

I have been thinking about doing this for a while. Would like to know if anyone prints their own. I have heard it is not hard to do
Title: Re: Blank boxes? Where to buy?
Post by: ebscreen on December 17, 2014, 01:40:58 PM
It's easy. We use waterbased inks. High mesh, low line counts. Send 'em down the dryer super fast. I used to print flatstock
and have several flatstock presses, now we do it on the MHM's with a slightly modified pallet.

Again, I like printing boxes.

We get those make a size ones from Uline. They have a crease every 2" or so from the top to about a third of the way down. You slit the corners down to the crease you want and fold it over, the one size can be adjusted from 24-72 shirts.

We print our own boxes, two color with acrylic craft paint, run them down the dryer at a low temp or let them air dry.

I was at a shop out west that had their logo printed on the tape. They used it for everything including screen tape. Kind of a waste for screen tape.

Oh, our larger boxes are creased 2" down as well.  forgot about that.

What lb test or crush weight are ya'll using? We had an order make a round trip via UPS (client forgot they wanted
the order relabeled....) and the boxes came back pretty haggard.
Title: Re: Blank boxes? Where to buy?

I order locally.  The guy does free delivery and they are around a buck even at an order of 100 units.  I print my own with a two color logo, phone number, website, etc.  It is super easy and quick.
Title: Re: Blank boxes? Where to buy?
Post by: IntegrityShirts on December 17, 2014, 03:04:13 PM
When you guys say you get them locally, do you mean an actual box supply company? Or an office supply co etc? I contacted a local custom corrugated box company and they were over $3 for 100 boxes. I think their market and equipment is more custom-oriented than I need.
Title: Re: Blank boxes? Where to buy?
Post by: mimosatexas on December 17, 2014, 03:09:13 PM
I order them from a company that just supplies boxes.  I doubt very much that they are actually cutting/gluing them, but are just buying in bulk and distributing.  The word "custom" has never been in any of their sales stuff that I've seen and the boxes are good quality and dirt cheap.
Title: Re: Blank boxes? Where to buy?
Post by: TCT on December 17, 2014, 10:30:42 PM
We print our own too, I'll check the crush weight tomorrow. It's a higher end double wall(forget what they call it, but I can look) white box, the Gildan T-Shirt case size. Local box manufacturer.

There may be a chance we could find a nation wide box company that has multiple locations and all go in on a bigger order.... Not sure if that is even a option as they would be made at different plants, but maybe. We would all have to agree on a box size though.

Thoughts?

Victory packaging (Golden State Container in CA) is who we use. Lots of locations but I doubt it on the bulk deal. The majority of the cost of a box is fuel.
Title: Re: Blank boxes? Where to buy?
Post by: TCT on December 17, 2014, 11:08:31 PM
I know that, that is why there are so many of them. You can only ship cardboard so far till the fuel to ship it costs more than the box.

I was thinking in terms of say, TSC or SanMar(obviously not that volume) they have a hand full of locations across the US. I'm 100% sure they get some boxes printed/made locally. I just thought maybe they had one master contract and the boxes for made in different locations. Guess it makes more sense that they would have a person at each location take care of boxes for that location.

Eb- thanks for gently pissing on my grand plan. ;) :D

Title: Re: Blank boxes? Where to buy?

So the local Co. came back with a price. At 300 boxes I can get them printed with a single color for $1.99 each. Plate costs between $250-$500 depending on size.

Home depot boxes are $1.68 each for 20.

Maybe I should start small lol 300 boxes would take up a lot of space and take me a long time to dole out unless I used them for every order.

On the other hand I wouldn't even have to think about printing them and would be set for a long time. What do you all think?

I've been trying for awhile to get my wife to let us spring for some custom boxes, 1.68 at home depot don't sound bad just to try it out.  I see a big benefit in having your logo on boxes going out the door, she sez it's a waste, think I might have to pull rank this time and get some and print them myself.  What would be the better color box white or the plan tan box or do any of you think it matters? because I'm only going to print one color.

How hard can these be to print?.....

1 screen for many sizes of boxes...The logo just needs to be a decent size....Water based inks that can just air dry.....

Yeah but is it worth it to buy less boxes, print & expose a screen, print one side, let it dry, print the other side, let it dry, all to save .31 cents per box?

Or just buy 300, pay the plate fee (ouch), and keep on keepin' on?

I was thinking more about the folks on "shoestring" budgets....And even if you can afford 300 all at once, on the 1st 300 you are saving 400.00+.....400.00 you might be able to use for some other "marketing" effort.....

Again, I like printing boxes. Breaks the monotony of fabrics.

Plus, we have like ten different designs for our boxes. Depending on how you look
at it,we just saves $3600 or whatever.

I can only imagine how a "full wrap" looks on a box....Perhaps a "story board" showing the screen printing process....

buy the blanks, print your own...it's so easy, we use plastisol so we can stack them right away....spend a day doing it and  you can have a few months worth of boxes stacked up, ready to go...save a penny, spend a penny, who cares, it all comes out even in the end....

Oddly enough, we were printing our own boxes the other day when my neighbor dropped by, he was blown away we could print boxes - he ordered a crate full from home depot for us to print! so basically,  printing our boxes paid for itself and then some....just another service to offer....

telling ya, Home Depot for blank boxes....they got a decent rate.

My printed boxes have gotten me a few box printing jobs as well :D

It is a pretty fun process too.  I prefer the tan/kraft boxes over the white, but I also print my logo in white and black, which looks great on that color.  If you have something like a red logo, it won't look as good on light brown as it will on white.

Since we are not a very big company and don't ship out daily I would rather print my own boxes and just keep a screen with our logo on it, and during the slow time print up a batch.  Like someone said it ain't that hard, plus I got a flat stock press I could plug back in if needed.

Ok, our edge crush rating is 44 lbs/in. they are single wall and measure 13x21x16. The double wall is nicer and what the Gildan boxes are, but with a edge crush of 44 they are pretty sturdy. One reason we like printing our boxes is that we can switch it up whenever we want.

You guys that were talking about the Home Depot boxes or boxes under $2ea. do you have a link to them? What size boxes are they? Brown or white?

Yeah, having your own boxes does look cool. We ship to tons of touring bands in the States and they love the boxes. Easy for them to spot their shipment at the venue.

However, our overseas shipments go in blank boxes. Some Customs Inspectors are a bit more over zealous about their jobs haha
