It is a Rat snake, about 3 plus feet long.
The only good snake is a dead snake.
Oh by the way, that is a police officer on the left and an aminal control officer on the right.

I would have to think that by it's name, it would have a lot easier time doing its job of keeping the rat population down, alive.

That's an awesome snake!
Here is one that I had in the front of my house. I relocated him/her to the woods behind my house after taking the picture. Beautiful Speckled King Snake.
Frog is right... you don't want to live in a world without snakes!

About 12 years ago I got a call at work from my wife, she said there is a small snake right under our sliding glass door to the patio, where our then 3 year old daughter went in and out about 20 times a day to the wading pool. She also said she thought it was a rattlesnake. I was 25 minutes away so I said it's probably not a Rattler, but a harmless Bull Snake which very similar looking. She asked how could she be sure, I said grab a broom and give it a poke, if it's a rattler it'll rattle.
2 minutes later she calls back "I poked, it rattled"
"I'll be right there" I said. I rigged a noose through a 4' chunk of 1/2" pipe and snared it, dropped it in a cooler and took it into the bush to release it:

this show the actual size, and that's not a big cooler. Still those little guys have very real venom.

I'm sure I'll get made fun of here, but if we had a snake in the shop I would need a change of shorts :D
We have had at least 5 drive-bys(sp?) directly outside the shop but a snake, screw that man!

Alex, i'm 100% there with you. We find turtles, drive bys, dogs, cats all over the yard, but snakes eff that biz.

Dude, we just don't have snakes up here much at all. They have creeped me out since I was a kid.
Probably also didn't help that at 17 or so I had passed ou... I mean slept over at a buddies apartment who had a massive snake in a aquarium that was too small. We awoke at 5 am to my buddy thrashing around because the snake got out and wrapped itself around him!

When my grandson was about 2 1/2, one day he was running around the backyard just laughing
and giggling with delight until my wife and I noticed he was running with a wiggling snake about a
foot long! Just a harmless grass snake but heart attack worthy for us. Ah, the innocence of youth...

I've found black snakes and more recently a couple of ring-neck snakes around my house, something I hadn't seen in years. But for the definitive authority on snakes I defer to a real pro.

I used to have a 5 ft. Boa Constrictor way back. It would get out of it's cage at night and crawl down between my girlfriend (at the time) and I for the heat. Her name was Linguina (the snake, not the girlfriend). It's not your everyday pet, but we really liked her. We eventually gave her to an aquarium. They have a job, just like spiders...

yeah, I am not a fan of snakes, but they are wonderful creatures. What is cool is to see the hawks in our backyard swoop down and pull them out of the english ivy and then pick them apart on a branch.

I love snakes and would never kill one unless it was a threat. My oldest brother was bitten by a copperhead when he was a kid. Painful as it was it did not pose any real danger to his life just a lot of medical care.

Have owned ball pythons ranging in size from 2 to 5 feet. Last one I owned was a red-tailed boa. Very large and powerful animal 6' long and app. 10" around depending on what it ate. I kill 3-6 cotton mouths a summer around my house, with a 2 and 3 year old running around its better to be safe.

While on a dog walk a few blocks from home, we heard a large CRACK! A block or so later we saw a small fire on a hillside, and later found out that a hawk had dropped its snake on an electric line. As it continued to the ground, apparently smoldering, it started the fire.

I'm on the same page. Snakes scare the crap out of me. Luckily you need to go about a half hour north of here before you'll see any Rattlers, or really any snakes for that matter.
There's been 2 people shot on our block and I'm pretty sure a few Bloods were arrested last week at the end of our street. Still not as scary as snakes.
