Nomex embroidery
« on: November 17, 2013, 07:43:19 PM »
I have a client who is involved with the NRHA and he asked me if I could embroider on Nomex. It appears I can get the flame resistant thread so why not? Have any of you done this? My partner said she would not do it. its  too pricey but I say charge more so that's not an issue. Anyway have any of you done this or know of a place that does? Is there anything  I need to know?

I have read that it is important to also use nomex bobbin as well as the thread so the area closest to the skin is also protected with flame retardent materials...more expensive but they say it lasts long and holds the color well.

What if you screw up the nomex item, are you going to replace it.
What if your work somehow compromises the integrity of the garment and that results in an injury to the wearer can you cover the legal fees to protect you a$$?
Would you work on a NASA pressure suit if you could buy special thread ?
If your answer to the above is YES, YES and YES then go ahead and take the risk :o I mean the job ::).

On the other hand, you could make it a specialty for your shop which is great for advertising.  Also, you may be able to charge more since there is not many that do this type of work:)

We sew on FR stuff all the time with the correct thread.  We do not assume any risk for loss or damaged product.  Most of the time we are sewing on our goods not customer provided.  We charge 4X the normal price for the goods and embellishment.  The FR threads or a lot more difficult to deal with and are more expensive.
