my guess, as somebody who's jumped out of airplanes a lot and seen what the planes are doing while setting up for formation jumps, the pilot was either hot dogging it or not paying attention. One of the most important rules in skydiving (and thus in the supporting activities like airplane flying) is "Plan the jump, jump the plan!". Wake turbulence is stressed out on regular bases and is something constantly on the pilots and the jumpers minds. My guess is the guy thought it would be cool to get over the other plane and have his jumpers exit from there. In the heat of the moment he forgot about the turbulence and bernoulli's effect and got to close. What ever happened, I am 99.99% sure it is the fault of the trailing pilot that ended up on the top (guessing from the facts as they were presented in the videos).

Yes, we've won our share of awards, and yes, I've tested stuff and read the scientific papers, but ultimately take everything I say with more than just a grain of salt! So if you are looking for trouble, just do as I say or even better, do something I said years ago!

in the vid, you see the pilot looking over and talking to the jumpers... so yes he was definitely not paying attention. not much of a way for the other pilot to have seen it coming/happening.

the video is of the lead pilot if I am not mistaken. The trailing pilot (who is supposed to be behind and off to the side by about 50 yards) is the one who ran into the leading plane (from what I can tell).

I was wondering if the lower pilot came up and caused it being the higher plane would be in his blind spot. I know nothing about the meat bombing brigade or their formations but the fact that no one died is amazing.  It's kind of like printing on nylon, stay cool and it will turn out ok lol.
