Speedball Glow in the Dark ink?
« on: August 29, 2013, 05:27:24 PM »
Anyone ever use it? Any good? Anything I might need to know to print with it, such as underbasing?

Got a school customer that thinks they want some glow in the dark ink printed, and I'm looking to make this as painless for me as possible.

Any experience with One Stroke's Glow in the Dark inks?

Pretty sure it's not for textiles, or at least not on top of an underbase. (which you'll need if going on
dark shirts, and is even recommended on lights) It's an acrylic I believe.

We've used the IC product because it was available locally. Glows like a mother effer.
As in sometimes I see a strange glowing from the dirty clothes basket at night and I'm
like "what the eff is that!"

Low low mesh underbase or P/F/P.

What color shirts?
Plastisol glow in the dark ink looks like snot. Pretty translucent. Almost disappears on a dark shirt and does require underbasing for a good effect.

So, why the Speedball? Because you only want a small amount?

How about just getting a small amount of Powder, and mixing it with your favorite base?

Check these guys out.

sorry for whatever reason i read this as trying to print flatstock with it.

I wouldn't use the speedball ink for textiles, we never had much luck with it.

We really like the union GID ink. We actually mix it in with white, to create a GID white. brightness dies down a little bit, but our customers really like it and don't seem to mind.

Shirt color isn't determined yet. This was put forward as an idea to go hand in hand with the yearbook this year. No decision has been made yet.
I didn't know IC made one, and I see Ryonet has it, so if this project comes to fruition, I'll probably use that as I've been switching to IC inks steadily. Speedball came to mind only because I can get it at Sam Flax here in O-Town, and convenience is my mistress.  :P

Thanks for all of the comments.

Did some sampling with One Stroke, it was great on white shirts, but if you're doing an underbase/overprint, you'll want to use an 86 range mesh--125 PFP barely made for a decent glow on a white base.
Oh, and as usual, it's expensive, but prints real nice...

We just did some "Hi-Lighter Yellow" PMS 395 underbase with
Wilflex Powder (30%) and clear base.
UB - 125 hit/flash/hit
Glow - 83 hit twice

Glowing like a champ. Had to wear shades. lol   8)
Looks great in the light too with the Hi-Lighter color on Black tee

Frog, have you used the glow in the dark powder you linked to?  If so, how much did it take and how was it applied.

No, I haven't.
I think that I had that link from a time some years back when folks were asking about different colors of glow powder.
(They, in fact, try to discourage folks from mixing their own paint and would rather you bought theirs pre-mixed, obviously a moot point for us.

The powder from Union has these instructions:
PHOSPHORESCENT GREEN POWDER ADDITIVE:

ADDI-1524 Phosphorescent Green Powder is used for making a phosphorescent (glow-in-the-dark) ink. Add six pounds of Phosphorescent Green Powder to one gallon of Metallic Clear (PLUS-9030) and print through a very coarse mesh on white fabrics or white underbase for best results.

That's a lot of powder for someone just playing around with a small quantity, another reason that I linked to a place that sells small amounts as well.

I have some powder and I just put as much as the ink will bear and still go through a screen (86).
