Anybody Specifically Request Black Over a White Underbase?

On Sky Blue 2000's. They were insisting on the black being printed over a white underbase. I said "wha?"
If they want a thicker deposit, I told them I would just go with a 110, etc. They said fine but I'm wondering if anybody has had anybody insist on black over a white UB?
Maybe there's a common reason I'm not familiar with.

Perhaps instead of "wha?" you should ask "why"?
I'm betting that this has something to do with previous experience.

I would seriously see if there is an issue, or an imagined issue that you may be able to better deal with another way.

Uber thick glossy plastisol prints (with horrible color schemes and amateur content) are all the rage these days with the sagging pants crowd.

But still, why would one pay for two colors? Why not p-f-p the black? Or just use an 86 with glossy athletic ink?

That's why I suggested a fully explained "why" from the customer, and then offer the better, and easier, method to achieve the same results.

I had a guy get pissed when I didn't underbase black once and he called me unprofessional because his art file was laid out in a way that black was sopposed to be underbased. Even though the print looked great he demamnded a reprint or his money back.

i only do it if its a emblem type logo, like a circle left chest and they want it to look like a patch up on the shirt..rare case though

As long as the print looks good, most customers should not care if a color is underbased or not.

Yes, the client always knows more about screen printing than we do. I get reminded at least once a week of this since our non contract crowd thinks they are going to be the next Ed Hardy.

I was seperating a job.  Red shirts with yellow and brown half tones, black and white.  The yellow needed an under.
I made the under plate and forgot to  disregard the black print.  When I came in the printer asked why I underbased the black.  Didn't want to, just screwed up.  The print looked really cool.  Really black and shiny, almost leather like.  The customer loved the shirts.

It seems that folks either want a print that is reeeealy soft OR reeeeealy thick. Bullet proof prints ain't dead.
ebscreen and Frog both hit it on the head as to where the customer was coming from. I laid down more black than I normally would. Looks good.
I didn't have any athletic black at the moment to use but that's a good idea Frog.
I don't want to spend anymore time on this print but I may show him what it looks like when you heat press a print. It gives it a pretty cool, rubber, smooth texture.

In order to get the same wash resistances on a colored garment between colors, it maybe best to go ahead and underbase all the colors. Why? Many many years ago I was printing a design for Disney on a red shirt and all the colors washed well but the black Mickey ears would fiberlate after wash. This is partially due to all the other colors having an underbase. after redoing the underbase to include the black Micky ears, problem solved.

I had that problem on a shirt with a lot of black coverage...we lowered the mesh count and laid it on THICK.  Never heard a complaint, but I never got a reorder either.  HMMM.
