Heatwave dryer shutting down
« on: August 12, 2013, 11:28:04 AM »
My dryer keeps shutting down on me (the alarm goes off). Started Friday, eventually got it to run but its doing again today. short story is everything kicks on, everything is cleaned out (lint traps and such), blower works. Dryer will get up 20-30 degrees and alarm, turn off then on again, gets another 20-30 degrees, Alarm. this went on Friday until I eventually go it to the 350 its set at and then it ran fine. So its doing it again. Techs said I needed to clean the spark plugs and Flame Rod, but it clearly states not to ever touch these 2 specific items in the manual.
So I guess has anyone ever cleaned a Flame rod? easy, hard? should I even attempt it?

Flame rod is nothing more than a well endowed spark plug. Pull it out and look for pitting or soot.  Most people sand lightly with fine grit paper and that does it.

if you have had this dryer in operation for at least a few months, it's time you have to clean your exhaust blower. On the side where your exhaust outlet is, after you have shut down, disconnected power of course, take your vent pipe off, remove the outer cage, then you will see a side panel with i think 4 screws. Take that off and you will see your exhaust blower fan/squirrel cage. You will need to have compressed air, and a shop vac, you will see a big open area going into the actual chamber, I block that off with cardboard so nothing blows down in there. clean that fan off really good, it's probably already gunked up. Put it all together and you will be good. This should be done at least every quarter. We learned the hard way and fought the alarm for months until a buddy of mine called me and told me exactly what the issue was.

Try that out, bet you'll be back in action. should take less than an hour total!

The blower fan is clean, relatively speaking. Minor lint. I checked that before I called because I had that issue before. I'm dismantling my dryer as we speak (write) but having a hard time getting all the wires disconnected to pull the whole contraption out. But thats what I'm working on. Hopefully its going to be less painful shortly

An incorrect mixture of gas and air can make for a dirty flame that will soot up your flame rod quick.

I have cleaned both the spark plug and flame rod with no issues.  My mini sprint was just a few months old and would not start, pulled both of them out and cleaned them with an emory cloth, put them back in and bam, started right up.  In my case a plumber told me there was probably a bunch of junk in the gas line from the installation of the new lines to the dryer that got the flame rod dirty.
