So Im the Designer at a shop that does screen printing and I'm looking to get some options on a new printer for slides. I currently have an Xante screen writer 3 and an oyo techstyler. The first problem is that these dont work with any OS newer than XP. I'm looking for a the best bang for your buck machine, a good budget printer that works with windows 7. Does anyone have any recommendations?

from what I've seen, 4800 series is a lot of bang for the buck. You can find a used one for $500 or so and they will let you print from a roll and use the 220ml cartridges. It also has the AccuInk available for it which is producing some impressive results. Add a XL version of Film Maker and you are golden! Under $1k for something that will print on par with your imagesetter (if set up properly).

Before we switched to a DTS system I was using a 4800 and Wasatch. My only complaint was the films were not quite as dark as we wanted them to be. Of course in hindsight we could have probably tweaked that some in the RIP or with the inks themselves.

I would imagine it has to do with the ink and maybe just in a small part with the film. with AccuInk and Acorn film I read 5.7 dMax when just setting everything up and eventually reduced the ink deposit so we are around 4.0 right now.

  Is that an epson printer? if I wanted to look for something a bit newer what would be a good printer to look at?

yes, that is an EPSON printer. 4800 and 4880 are older models, the newest version is the 4900. It's been out a year or two at the most, but all the RIP and ink manufacturers should be up to speed by now.
