What kind of ink would we need to print on vinyl cushions?
« on: April 23, 2013, 12:44:34 PM »
I am concerned that the wear and tear would not be compatible with regular plastisol. Am I mistaken?

Yes, we've won our share of awards, and yes, I've tested stuff and read the scientific papers, but ultimately take everything I say with more than just a grain of salt! So if you are looking for trouble, just do as I say or even better, do something I said years ago!

I have always used Vinyl ink on vinyl.

Last I used a water based one from TW because the solvent based inks were really nasty.

This was years ago, so there are probably new (though not necessarily improved) inks out there now.

If you have time send a sample to nazdar. The tech support is great. They will get you exactly what you need. I have used the da series ink on some vinyl barber capes and it has lasted for 5 years now...

Speaking of Vinyl, let's remember Chrissy Amphlett of the Devinyls, who just passed away, saying that she hopes that this song should be a reminder to encourage self examination for breast cancer.

I think that much like many other materials vinyl is a bit of a misnomer. Indeed the material that goes
on the side of automobiles seems a heck of a lot different than the kind that goes on my turntable.

I'm sure there's an air dry for it but I kind of get the feeling that catalyzed plastisol might have enough tooth.

A while back I heard a great story about how you can TRANSFER a fresh catalyzed plastisol print from a jacket to a car seat on a hot day...  but that probably won't help you.   ;D

In all seriousness though, I'd test a catalyzed psol sample if it could get me out of printing air-dry vinyl ink...

I told customer we were a no go. too busy now to mess around and be on the hook for messing up a print on cushions. If something was to go wrong, they would have to custom make more and that's not the headache we need now. As it is, I spent yesterday putting out fires.

thanx for the info!

The thing about stuff like this is it is usually less costly to sell the finished product from an ASI/PPAI supplier than the sum of the part....

My first screenprinting job in '72 was vinyl ink on those vinyl phonebook covers with ads, police, fire, poison control. Vinyl ink smells a lot, but bites right in. You could try Multi-purpose, but vinyl will work better.

Not quite '72 but started printing Domino's Pizza bags back
in '89. Any way to get into printing shirts was my goal.

We used Nazdar Gloss Vinyl series inks. The owner would bring in
massive amounts of vinyl used for auto seats. Some was textured
and was just crazy to print, but "cheap" for him.

The Vinyl air dry ink does "bite" into the surface and is very durable.
Testing is key.

Isn't it scary that '89 is getting to be a long time ago? ;D

'89? That's when a white print job on red 50/50's for the March of Dimes turned pink ten days later, and helped make me a no 50/50 red with white print zone!
