Discharge on fleece?
« on: January 03, 2013, 09:00:15 PM »
Thinking of making our first discharge job to be on an upcoming fleece job. How does discharge print on fleece in comparison to shirts?  I fully expect to be printing discharge like Brandon and tonypep out of the starting gate by the way. :-)

Hey,
Hahaha, thanks! While it is second nature now there are shops out there that blow us away and Tony's is one of them. But give it a shot. Just test, test, test before you ruin, ruin, ruin. Hoodies are NOT cheap. I don't know any shop that can take the chance of eating a hoody order. Test and wash. I'll post some simple pics in a little bit.

Here are some simple ones. The Samothrace is a pantone gray on ITC 80/20. The blue pantone Skillet trailer is on AA 50/50.

I don't notice much difference printing fleece from shirts with water base / discharge. I actually find it easier that plastisol for various reasons.

We are doing some cool over zippers and full backs tomorrow on Gildan 50/50's. I will post when I can

Testing is of course critical here. The construction of fleece varies more widely than "tee shirts" and it's easy to run into trouble here; trust me. Personally we just don't offer this option. Even a DCUB is not always a solution. This is dependant upon a number of variables that; while may make it possible and awesome at times, an opportunity for failure as well. If I had time I would better research this but at this moment I do not. But BTW one of the benefits of WB is over the seams which many have learned. No gummy plastisol to muck things up.

We have had very good luck with Independent and discharge. No problems so far. IND4000 and IND4000Z's are what we use most.

So here are those Gildan 50/50's I was talking about.

*Please note I do not recommend this for anyone. The white discharge in the print is a very "off white," or very "vintage" if you will. I know the client and what they are looking for. Not the best pictures but you get the drift. The art itself is very distressed but you can't see it in the photos as well. The client welcomes the old, worn ink look.

I would not recommend discharging these if a client wants a bright image. My point is that the ink is CCI discharge and it is a pantone gray and a white. Works on a Gildan 50/50 but is very distressed and "worn."

Independents work well and you can even do some great multicolor halftone work over the seams.  We had a customer who wanted to do some of the art they had previously run as all over prints in jumbo prints on zip up hoods - they came out surprisingly well.  We had done discharge prints on IDC's before, but not with this level of detail, multicolor and over the pocket seams as well as the zips, but they came out perfectly and the customer was thrilled.

Don't be afraid to push the envelope - you never know what you can accomplish unless you do!

Just my .02 YMMV and all that stuff.... :)
