My First Sim Process Print - UltraSeps
« on: December 28, 2012, 01:31:27 AM »
I did my first simulated process job yesterday.   I used Ultraseps to separate.   Ended up with 6 screens including black and highlight white.  Printed all on 230 mesh using a manual press.

Let me know your thoughts and suggestions.   I'm somewhat happy with the results, as it was my first try.  But I know it can be improved.   Thank you in advance!

I think it looks great! You say that you know it can be improved. What will you do differently next time? Will you print the same design again and try different methods?

Looks good for the first one.  I think it can use some tweaks (depending on what the original looks like).

From the looks of this print, I would say that I would prefer to include some color in the shadow areas. It looks as if the whites fade to black and the shadows are the black shirt. This makes it a tad blotchy and "dark color" always works best for shadows versus using shirt color or straight black as the darker parts.  Black fading into small %'s of color up to the solid flesh area such as the ladies arm.

It could be the photo, but the faces and people might could use a tweak on red to get a bit more of a flesh tone.

Thanks for the feedback!   It is really encouraging!!!

By the way, I'm the bald guy - ha!

We all wore black or grey, so not much color to get from the original photos, which were shot in front of a green screen using DSLR.  So pics started as hi-res.

I'm not satisfied with the skin tone at all - but the lady (my wife), said it was acceptable. The other guys said it looks good too.   So I'll be printing some more.  We do a new band theme shirt every year to sell at shows.

I was afraid to bump the red too much as I didn't know how it would turn out on press.  Not much I can do about it now , I guess unless I tweak and burn another screen - which requires cleaning all screens to re-register.  That seems like a pain if its marginally acceptable.

Here are the print sequences if that helps with additional feedback.

Thanks again!

Those look more "toned" than the original picture.  Looks pretty good for a first time Sim.  Congrats.

The last picture except for the top of his head looks much better than the first pic.

Those are actually about 15 shirts in to the run.   The original pic posted was the first test print.   Sorry, should have clarified.

It's hard to tell in the pic but it looks like the blue is getting a lot of dot gain which is killing the detail in that background.

For a somewhat quick fix print the red before the blue and flash after the blue before the final 2 colors.

Nice job for your first attempt Im sure it was better then mine!

Yes, I was surprised at the blue - it turned out much more dominant than on the monitor screen.

LOOKS GREAT. Its hard to manually print simulated process and get the results from shirt to shirt as with a nice automatic press. i think you did great here with manually printing them.

Good job. The more and more you sep out the art and then print them yourself whether manual or auto you will learn a lot. From dot gain to print order to wow. While true that on the auto you will have the consistent print from first shirt to last (well, you should anyway!) on the manual you can switch up your print order and play around. Keep it up. The more you do the more fun you will have. Well, I find it fun. I know some printers that could care less!
