Ooops!

There's a billboard that sits right across the street from the front door to the shop, so about once a month we get to watch them change it. 
This morning we watched them put up this (taken with phone through the front window cuz it's cold outside):


Now this is NOT about poor timing, or gun control or being insensitive to tragic events, or just plain stupidity or anything like that.......(this had to be in the pipeline for several weeks, if not months to get on this particular billboard)
It's about how many people had to see it and PROOF it, BEFORE it went up.

This is Moses Lake.  NOT Mosses Lake.

3 hours later it looked like this:


Jordan Reffett (used to play for the Steelers) It's his new business, and is he PISSED!

I've been in the printing industry for 30 years and it's never failed to blow my mind how a blatant error could make it through all phases of production and into print.

Part of it (I'm sorry to say) is that a lot of employees don't believe it is their responsibility to notice errors. The customer has approved the proof and that's good enough for them. Too bad, because a reprint can cost thousands of dollars, and telling the customer it's his own fault certainly doesn't make him any happier. It's extremely awkward to explain to someone that, yes we made an error but you didn't catch it, so too bad.

Not only that...But who the hell thought it was a good idea to put up an ad displaying a semi automatic pistol just days after Fridays tragedy? I'm sure that was part of the reason they took it down.

Um why is it all of a sudden bad to talk about, sell, show pictures of or own guns? For real the gun is a tool a guy on the same day uses a knife to slash 22 people but guns are the issues? Not crazy people?  No offense but what the hell is Wrong with everyone the gun did not load itself aim itself and shoot itself! Get real if the parents or people are too upset to see guns go see a shrink. This is the most retarded way of thinking I have ever seen. Oh no he had a screen printed shirt on and he used it to choke a kid we should all out of respect not screen print for a year. WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH YOU ALL

I'm not against guns ...I was just pointing out that this billboard is going to remind everyone of what just happened and emotionally turn them off. It's not offensive, and doesn't have anything to do with the tragedy but it was a bad advertising decision to put it up so soon after.

That's fine, our wedding photographer put out a Christmas card with a "Skyfall" theme, but instead said Snowfall.  It's a cute card, his son is dressed like dr no...complete with the cat.  But he is holding an assault rifle.  Bad timing, but seriously, I wouldn't send a Christmas card out with a gun on it, unless I sold guns.  Also, Bond carries a Walther PPK, everybody knows this.

Yeah, for advertising and PR it's best to avoid all controversial stuff. You never know how many potential customers might not care for it.

Because someone walked into an elementary school and killed a lot of kids a few days ago.
They used a gun. Most folks would agree it's probably a touchy subject at this point.

Well, locally, yesterday a parent walked into a school and beat the crap out of a coach.

Should we now all have to wear gloves on our hands because it's just "too soon"?

Also, half the people that I have told about this event have said "Coach probably deserved/needed to have his a$$ kicked."

Granted, I understand how a "beat down" and a killing is different but isn't it basically in the end the same root issue, a dude went nuts and acted out his aggression in a manner that is unacceptable.

Well, we don't "have to" do anything...But from a business standpoint (advertising) it's a good idea to take into account the feelings and beliefs of the prospects you are marketing to. You want them to think about your product or service in a positive way.

Maybe I misunderstood but wasn't the guy upset that they covered up his billboard?  I could have it wrong but my impression was someone ELSE covered up the add (maybe the billboard company) without the advertiser's permission.

Now, does that content in particular get a little gray?  Not my call.  I wouldn't advertise like that, but then again, I don't sell guns.  How do you advertise guns/shooting ranges without images of guns?

Then on the other hand, you got some groups that put bull's eyes on maps and then don't think there is any potential for nuts to misread that message.

Basically the comparison I'm making is that sane adults feel like that billboard is in bad taste, but similar "sane" adults don't see how an insane person might be mislead by their imagery.
