Reprints/poor dye-ing
« on: December 11, 2012, 06:49:49 PM »
We are doing a reprint of a job that is 2 color discharge print (white and gray), on a black Gildan 5000 Tee. Alot of these tees, in this batch, are coming out gray and a blue-ish white, because of how the garment was dyed.

I haven't talked to the customer about this yet, but what would you do? how would you handle it?

sorry to hear it.
we're the offending shirts all the same size?

XL G2000s have been nothing but trouble for us on the discharge front.
We just took it on the chin for a large quantity of this size, and had to initiate a re-print.
White discharge activating to a pale green. Gildan must be over-dying some slow selling royal blue.

If the customer requested discharge then they should be informed as to these types of issues.

If you chose to discharge for whatever reason then it's on you.

We've been having more issues with Gildan 5000 lately. Maybe a seasonal thing? As shirt
sales slow they start re-dying more?

Technically speaking, a discharge underbase and plastisol top would be the next best thing,
which we've been doing more and more of.

EB just beat me to it

The best compromise on poorly discharging shirts is probably a discharge base with a soft hand plastisol on top.
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

Even though i've told the customer about it, they will still be bummed out. They order frequently, but not a ton. Just didn't know if anyone had any situations like this in the past.

but thanks for the advice so far

The problem your running into is very common with Gildan t shirts in general. the problem is that a lot of the time with black tees they are shirts that were formerly another color that had a blemish or defect of some sort so in an effort to save the garment they just redye these shirts black. so with a lot of brands of tees you can possibly run into this same issue. Some companies actually inspect their garments and test for discharge qualities, Gildan however does not. NextLevel and tultex are a few that are always great for discharge and water base printing as long as your printing on 100% cotton. they are a little more expensive but the quality is there and you will get very consistent results with discharge.
