Redundency and models
« on: October 09, 2012, 05:38:22 AM »
As we started on this  divisions buildout, it struck us that the need for equipment to produce a measured continuous throughput of product on the short schedule most customers operate on required redundant systems in place.
Machinery breaks, and short overloads occur on a regular basis. We revisited our model, and decided that we needed to adjust our view and budgets to include some form of multiples and backups for the various tasks machinery is required for in this industry.
We also decided, being scrounger types, new equipment may not be necessary to fullfillment this goal, just adequate used.
Now of course, space is at a premium. However, being able to go Plan B seamlessly has already added a level of confidence to the operation. The end result of course is a perceived professionalism on the part of the customer. We have already spanked our competitors in the local geographic several times, and the invaluable word of mouth has begun.
Would appreciate some viewpoints other than my own on this subject, as I become enamored with myself, and cease to critically view the subject at hand.

Two exposure units, two automatics, two compressors, two separate media output devices?
Is this what you are referring to? See [attached] for  a pic  of my redundant compressor setup. Since the entire business relies on air... having a back up compressor is huge.  A second automatic was a big step for us, not just for production, but also for piece of mind. This, coupled with a rigorous preventive maintenance schedule, creates a great level of redundancy...

Four seems to be my magic number. Not redundant but back ups as necessary and critical to increase throughput as necessary.

Throughput and redundancy may overlap, but require different thinking. I was fortunate enough to be production manager at a very well-run shop that ran 24/7. It really opened my eyes to throughput. It's like tripling your shop size and equipment overnight at virtually no, or at least very little cost.

Equipment redundancy is good though, I remember tipping my Nu-Arc flip top on it's side, overriding the lock-out and shining the light on my wall mount vacuum frame.  8) Long exposure, but it got the job done before I got the 8K Olec light source for bigger screens. I also just bought a second padprinter used for $300 because the thought of my 1 machine going down gave me nightmares.
