My first discharge underbase WOW

Now that it's being brought up (and me being a union ink guy/newbie), what are the recommended inks to use on top of a discharge base?  Want to make sure I start off on the right foot when I start playing with discharge (soon hopefully).

We use both Wilflex epic and Rutland C3 on top of discharge base with no issues.

You sure you used Union Ultrasoft on Discharge??

I've been told by Joe Catazone (Union Inks) you cannot and one of my efforts using Ultrasoft was atrocious.

That's interesting. The teal and blue is ultrasoft and the yellow was a maxopake. I did the wash test about an hour ago and they look great. I did base the inks back with softhand. Not sure why union would say they don't work. Maybe its just some colors. I have heard some union reds will change to orange when used with plasticharge. Maybe a union guy can chime in on why it shouldn't of worked.

This may be the case.  The sample run I did some time back was with Ultrasoft Red and yes, it did turn orange and looked terrible.  Joe Catazone is the person I talked to and I think his area is New York and he did tell me later that Flag Red would work but not Ultrasoft.  I took that to mean none of the Ultrasofts.  Like you say, maybe a Union guy will chime in for clarification.

Yeah, I'd like to know what ultrasofts will and won't work... I have 90% ultrasoft inks right now.  Maybe I need to rethink that if this is the case.

I believe the reference to Ultrasofts not working is in regards to certain reds only.
The discharge chemicals eat one of the red pigments and turn it an orangey color.
This pigment may be found in other colors but will be most noticeable in bright
reds. The Maxopaque series either have a glutton of pigment or a different grade
of it. (I've heard they use an automotive grade)

the deal with makopakes is the pigment load of course the color is going to look brighter and more opaque . but in exchange you lose some hand. we have printed over discharge base plenty of times with RFU plastisols and got great results. be sure your running your electric dryer just slow enough to get the full discharge. believe me over baking it can give you inconsistant results also. 5% activator max in the base also will help
