400 Watt halide

So I picked up a 400 Watt halide fixture with 3 new bulbs for nothing. I am thinking of making a single point exposure unit. Currently using an six bulb UV florescent set up. Is it worth the troubles? Will I see a big enough difference exposure time, better halftones or at that wattage is it a near wash?

Sweets I recently got a 1000 watt exposure unit and it made a big differents in my halftones and burn times, so yes you can see some pretty good results...yellow mesh I found burn the best for fine lines and halftones for me.

400w isn't a lot, but I think you should see a difference; if you can locate a good deal on a 1000, it would be better.

All other things being equal, a vacuum makes the biggest difference in quality, but a single point 400 will probably give you great screens in 90 seconds or so with good EOM of a Photoploymer on a yellow 160.
I have no idea what you are getting now.
You will, of course, need to figure out a shutter system as this light is probably not a hot strike. (if a hot strike, and bulbs are even included, that is even better!)

For the last ten years, these units often even turn up as throwaways as schools and gyms and warehouses utilize more energy efficient alternatives.

Right now I am at 8-9 minutes much too long now that I am busy. I guess I could make it and allow to upgrade to bigger source. I can't help but think it may be wiser to buy a nice used unit for a couple hundred

I am not so sure that there are many "nice used units" out there for a couple hundred.

Even just the Olec heads and ballasts (no frame or table) usually cost far more than that, though of course, there are always wild deals that pop up.

I've got a 40-1k I would let go for $400.  I was asking $500, but there just isn't that much interest in expo units right now.

Nothing wrong with Brad's 40-1k, I just got a smoking deal on a 3140 and went that direction.

oh, snap.  that's the other problem is there are so many smoking deals out there that it's hard to unload equipment.

I wish I could get $600 for it.

Honestly you should be able to get $600 for it.

People on that budget just don't understand the benefit of that unit over a fluorescent setup or a cheapy work light setup.

For the money, I'm not sure you can get a better unit than a used 40-1k.
