How do I delete the white ackground from a vector graphic?
«

I have a simple black and white vector graphic of a Fluer De Lis. I want to delete the whote background from the graphic. When I put it on top of other images, the fluer is contained in a white background "canvas"....the "canvas" part of the image blocks out the background. How Do I make it to where JUST the vector graphic itself is all there is to the overall image. (hope I made sense)

In Corel If it's a vector you should be able to ungroup it and deleting the white background

One thing in Illustrator (if that's what you're using, or possibly if the graphic was done in Illustrator) is that if it was an autotrace from a scan or other raster image, you also may have to "Expand" the image to break the parts apart under the "Object" menu. A combination of that and ungroup are sometimes necessary.

In CorelDRAW, one would hit Cntl and then select. That will isolate the desired object from the group.
Working in wireframe can help discern the different objects, but with a background larger than the Fleur de Lis, it will probably be one easy-to-snag object.
Otherwise, still no biggie, but it may have to be removed in multiple sections (common on traces)

If after doing a "trace" you are left with bits of white, you can use the magic wand to select all of them at once....

i did the ungroup then delete...and its getting me where im going...BUT now all the white in the image has been deleted. Its a vector graphic from my Ryonet cd.....its a tribal looking flure de lis....line drawn image on a white background....I want the white to remain in the image....i got the white background "canvas" gone...but in deleted that it deleted all the white in the flure de lis...so now when i put the flure on top of an image you can see right through the flure....so im half way there i guess.

Here is a trick.......
Is it black art on white?....If so, rasterize it at a high resolution....The do a "Live Trace" to get it back to vector......Setting should be for b&w or 1 colour logo...Use the setting to ignore white.....Expand and you should now have just black as vector.....

I think this is what is happening, and what you are asking.
You've deleted the back box already.
The yellow would represent the white, the navy would be the black.
You need to break the object apart, and combine the proper paths.
Make two objects out of one.
You will likely have to work in wireframe after you 'break apart' the graphic.
So, break apart, and combine, are the two commands you're after.
* the second is actually one 'compound path' over a 'path' I believe,
if you wanna get technical, but whatever.

Open Pathfinder palette and play with it (In Illustrator)
Find some training videos about it, you will like it.
That is one of the tool pallets that I have open at all the time
