ok so you get this art from a local school, what to do...
« on: March 09, 2012, 12:20:57 PM »

On the back is all movie and tv show qoutes from the 90's.

I think the question is obvious... and I have a pretty good answer but wanted to see what everyone else thinks.

I had a stars wars on last summer, a bunch of storm troopers and the dark one. Anyway I just asked if they had a license to use them, they said no and I said if they want to provide me a letter stating that if sued they would cover all of my expenses and legal fees. They provided me a different design.

Depending on what you watch on TV, it's possible to not recognize any of those characters. Personally, I really only recognize Homer. I would have no idea that those other characters may be copyright purported but someone other than the school.

Does anyone here personally know of anybody having been actually sued for copyright violation? I see ridiculous stories in the news from time to time like somebody who got "lettered" by lawyers from North Face to stop printing South Butt.

Copyright protection by intimidation is getting out of control.  It seems the lawyers know it's easier for folks to bend over than to fight back on some of these ridiculous copyright infringement claims.

Educate them that parody is usually the only defensible use. (and only if it's worth your time)
For this end, my twisted brain sees, among the selection there the Drug Rats, The White Powder Puff Girls and Buzzed Lightyear, the germ of a great design, but one that probably would not fly with most High School administrations.

Well, same situation probably unless for a state of extreme intoxication, a typical state for many college students! lol!

Yep, a ton of copyright infractions. I recognize most, but don't know the names, except Homer of course. You could print it, and take the chance, but it's not worth it. It just looks like a commercial shirt, no event or anything, like '90's palozza or something.

I told them they had to come up with a new logo, it's not worth my business for a 450.00 job.

I got this:

Starting at the top left; Timon and Pumba (Lion King), Doug, Power Rangers, Homer, POWER Puff Girls (not powder... they get mad when you call them that), Buzz Light Year (Toy Story), Johnny Bravo.
Starting back over at the bottom left; Dot (Animaniacs), Arnold (Hey, Arnold), Tommy (Rug Rats), Meowth (Pokémon).

Only one I didn't really know was the Pokemon one, and I knew it was a pokemon.

I graduated HS in 94 and have a 2 year old. ;)
