Where can I get a refurbished Epson 3000 these days? Apparently the most reliable printer out there, right?

most reliable is debatable, but they are workhorses and they aren't that expensive. You might be better off with a 1400 if you don't need 17" wide output.

I would also check out the 4800, it's got an autocutter.
I still prefer dye based inks though....but I do use a hybrid...

The 3000 can't handle dye based inks?
What makes the hybrid ink different to the other dye based inks?
Our Stylus 4000 is clogging too often. Never ever use pigment based inks first and then change to dye based inks. Disaster waiting to happen.

the 3000 is dye based, and i used to run dye inks, but i get much better Dmax values from the hybrid black ink. Like AMAZING opacity, even on non-WP film.

Great.
Do you have any trouble running the 4800? I'm so frustrated with the 4000 by now.
Printhead is constantly overheating.

why is the printhead overheating? I've never heard of that.
I still run a 3000, pierre is trying to get me to upgrade, and one day I will, but I just rebuilt our 3000 with new heads and other goodies, so it's good for another 5-7 years.

Generally the print head overheats if there is not enough ink getting into the head. The ink is what cools the head. What worries me is that all this trouble started after we began using AccuRip, which might as well be only a coincidence.

We used to run pigment based inks on 7 of the 8 channels and then replaced them all with dye based inks.
As instructed we flushed all channels but I was told it would not guarantee that there won't be any residue of the old inks left on the print head or the tubes. That residue will gel with the dye based inks at one point and clogg the head. I was then told to make sure next time we buy an Epson and want to use only dye inks to make sure no ink cartridges have been installed. So generally as long as you run dye and nothing else before that you should be fine. So I was told. If you mx the inks you we asking for trouble.
