What do you folks use for your navy ink? I have both Union and Rutland. They both seem to be very dark. I finally had a customer complain that I used black ink instead on navy. I told them that is the standard stock navy. I have two different brands and that is how it looks. She was ok with the answer. However, I can't help but to agree with her. It is a little too dark in my opinion. Are all navy inks that dark? Is there a different shade of blue that you use when a customer requests navy?

Yes, Union Navy is quite dark. Years ago, I came up with a custom mix of half Union navy and half Union royal that many customers opted for when shown the difference.
For the last five or so years, I have been using IC Navy.

we usually explain how dark the Navy is and ask if they would prefer reflex blue. Some switch . . .

There is enough demand for us to stock reflex.

i had the same experience with a client
she wanted navy ink ,when i show her the navy from union
she did not like it
instead i mix a quart of PMS 2747
ever since i use it as a light navy

Willed lite navy, make sure you order lite not normal navy which is almost black. Lite is just perfect.

Wilflex Bears Navy...problem solved.  It's close to 1/2 light royal and 1/2 navy.  It's perfect!

Union Ink makes a "Light Navy" that is perfectly acceptable Navy.

That's what I use and that's because I was around when my buddy was complaining about how dark Union regular navy and how he was using light navy from here on.

the worst is Port Authority's "classic navy" button downs."  I am too colorblind to see the difference.

You aren't kidding there, trust me we have had complaints on them a few times.

Sanmar dumped Columbia which is fine with me, I am really starting to love the Ohio line right now.

OGIO, ok, it spell checked Ohio.  Yeah, I had some marketing money left and I got myself a golf bag for free last year.  Sweetness.  Their bags are unbeatable.

Yeah, I had a client order some navy of two different brands one for the ladies and one for the mens... I got them in and was like "oh sh1t... they picked them!"  ???

That's when you need color swatches so that there are no misunderstandings.
Whenever someone orders different brands (or fabrics) it is up to you to remind them that they may not be even close on some colors.
Just the difference between blacks can be startling.

I tell people that they black-navy.  I had someone swear up and down that it was black and I kept telling them that it's navy, they didn't believe me until I showed them a black shirt.

Unfortunately not all our clients are local and they rely on Web Site catalogs, and online the true navy looks lighter than in person. We know now to warn people which is fine.

I was mixing Union navy with royal for a long time till i recently saw they had the light navy and it works perfect.
