I just screenshot the item from our suppliers website and embed it in and put the art on top.

for basic brands we use photific.com but for onesies, hats, boxes, coffee stuff like that we use placeit.net. You have to go through items to get them stand alone but its helpful, Also for model mockups.

if nothing else we also just mockup in photoshop

I typically just grab high resolution from S&S and scale to about 100% size (~30" tall from HPS to bottom for a tee)

Then just size the art and place it.

Illustrator has a new mockup function that can help it make more realistic, I tried it once on a hat (flexfit png) and it failed but could be useful as it gets better or maybe on something more flat

You can see that here -

We use Pixelsauce.com. Not free though.

or you can use Canva

or Placeit

Hats can be found on Pixelsauce.com

We've always downloaded hi res files and created them ourselves, as suggested by setting the image to a size, we like size large for that, then scaling the design onto it so the proportions are mostly correct. However, a couple of days ago I started using the mockup creator in Printavo and it does a nice job, though not as high res as I'd like, but fast...
