epson 1400 upgrade?

Looking to upgrade from a 1400 to a faster printer and bulk ink system. What are you guys using?

Just upgraded from my 1400 yesterday.   Picked up a 9800 on ebay.  Depends on how much you want to spend.

Upgraded to a R1800 used off c-list . If used for film output , new it would have been a huge waste of money as it is basically an 1400 with 2 more print heads and 800 bucks more than a 1400 new from Amazon. The 1400 is a great printer, I could only see upgrading if you want something wider. They make bulk ink systems for the 1400 I'm pretty sure, I've been using refill carts and bulk ink from inksupply.com just fine.

4800 is our main rig, 1400 for backup.  Single black running on both.  After testings, I never saw any benefit to multi-black and most of the settings I've had suggested created inferior images in my opinion.  I can wait the extra x minutes for crisp positives.

Accurip makes a sheet film feeder for the 1400 that might up your speed without having to invest in a new printer. 

The 4800 is robust compared to the consumer grade models.  I managed to do a head replacement and some other repairs with relative ease on ours.

I with we had the next width up though, 24" or even that sweet 9880 for our flatstock setup as our max image is around 25x36 and it'd be cool to use that without tiling or outsourcing the film.

In real life, I find us using the 17" width of the 4800 just a handful of times per month.  Unless your doing a lot of wider images you may want to stick with that 1400.  Pierre has found it to produce tighter dots than the 4800 so you may not really be upgrading aside from the roll feed.

That and the 1800 handles roll media, not to well but it does. Just pull/unwind the roll a bit and give the printer some slack.
