Gas Dryer Install
« on: October 09, 2020, 01:44:06 PM »
So I finally got a gas dryer 25' long 6' belt width with 10' of heat.

We still have a workhorse powerhouse 5217 but 91amps 3phase is not an option in our panel box. Its sitting in the corner.

It is an older used dryer but I did take the rollers and wire brush them and hit them with some high temp resistant black paint (looks great!). Its all put together now. I ran the wiring in emt pipe to the box.

Here's the issue. I'm a newbie to gas. when I disassembled the dryer to move it I didn't pay enough attention to the pipe size and don't know what size iron pipe to buy. I'm pretty sure it's very important.

Here are the dryer specs:
10amp 3ph
220000 btu
8-12W.C.
The lines will go about 50'

Right now I have a tap on incoming gas line with a shutoff valve(capped currently). There is a union on the dryer right before the regulator. I plan to put another shut off valve right before the union as this is the suggested hookup by M&R techs. I really just need to know the proper pipe size for my specs? I don't want to supply too much or two little gas to the unit. I plan to hard pipe with black iron and use thread sealant and Teflon on the connections.

1 call M&R or who every made the dryer
2 ask the person you bought it from about pipe size
3 the gas company might know and can help you
4 I'm sure you'll get better answers from someone here that has that same dryer
5 Congrats!!!!!, now you really move some shirt down the line

At least 1", preferably 1.25" or larger. It will run on less but the pipe acts as a reserve tank for surges.
Yes on the valve and don't forget the dirt stub.

Now we're getting somewhere! I do have a ticket open with the MFG but it is Friday so fat chance on a call back today. (Trying to hookup this weekend.)

Now if only I knew what a dirt stub was. hahaha. The union is hooked up to a T with a 1/2" pipe shooting down and capped straight down beneath where the inlet to the machine attaches. I'm guessing its a sediment trap that = dirt stub???

A plumber can run the gas line if needed.  If you have a new gas hookup, the gas company will probably require a pressure test.

Check your WC(water column coming in), our oven uses 6" and we have just enough for that and a couple furnaces.  There are a total of 5 furnaces in the building and I don't think we could run everything at the same time.

I'm in a multi tenant building.(industrial park). The gas is definitely on and we're already using it. We have an overhead heater in the shop that is where the gas line comes in. It is reduced to 1/2". I don't plan to use this heater as the dryer should create enough heat to keep us cozy during the winter.

The incoming supply line is 1.25" and our tap is a 1" pipe that is currently capped. I know for a fact that the other shop was not running this dryer with pipe that exceeded 1.5" as I shut off and disconnected it when we disassembled, just forgot to measure the OD.

I'm trying to not involve a plumber on this install as it is fairly straightforward and I've hard piped tons of air lines across warehouses. I do have a neighbor who does HVAC I might just try to trade work and have him do it next week.

Thanks for all of your input! Hopefully i'll get this thing running this weekend. The MFG did call and confirmed 1" is fine.

Get your neighbor to do it.  I did help the hvac installer with the spec and layout a bit but was glad to have someone that can cut/thread large pipe efficiently doing the actual work.

I think a dirt stub is where you T down off a vertical drop to let junk build up in there instead of your new to you dryer?  Kinda like goosenecking your air lines to keep water out but at the bottom.

Congrats on the gas!
