Like you Dan, I also use higher PPI for bitmap halftones in Photoshop, though I go for 1200. As you say, the higher the pixel count, the smoother the dots are...

When I do halftones from PS I use 1200 in the conversion too. Like Dan said, do a test sep conversion at 300, 600 and 1200 then look at the dots at 100%. I did this and my 300 dots looked almost like stars, the 1200 have a much more round shape.
