Re-Sizing Print Image Mid -Run 8/6

We've all been there. Youth size XS through Adult 3XL.
3 Color FRONT, 2 Color BACK. We've always sized the image to fit on
the smallest shirt in the order. But - that doesn't work all the time

At what point do you consider a re-size a separate and unique order?

Local Brewery 144 Shirts. 3 Color FRONT, 3 Color BACK
Customer wants one size FRONT for men, different size for women.
Same for back.

So - that turns into 12 screens real quick. 6 men, 6 ladies.
Are you charging for the additional screens, or does the ladies
portion of the order become a separate and unique print order.

How are  you guys pricing these mid run image size changes..

I charge for the extra screens & setup. I keep it as one order as long as print size is the only thing that changes, with the idea that we've only had to get approval on one version of the art. But if they want to change some text on the ladies, switch some ink colors, etc., and we have to go back & forth on details like it's two orders, then it gets charged as two orders.
Nice guys laugh last.

For me, it's no longer an order of 144 shirts, but rather multiple orders of however many each size requires. Price accordingly.
When I do this with, for instance, the same breast print on all shirts, that part of the order will receive the lesser price of the greater quantity.
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

In this case, (as one order), but with screen change charges.  This keeps the design #'s etc. all the same IN the art folder, we house the two separate job files for screens.
If it were larger in quantity, we may break it up as two orders.  For right now, it keeps things from getting lost or mixed up with other re-orders from same customer with similar motifs

And I don't think either way is wrong, just how one shop approaches it.

We will give the higher price break for the shirts and charge for two set of screens. Most customers understand this completely and are appreciative. If they don't, go somewhere else!

I probably should have been clearer in that, though priced as if it were multiple smaller orders, it is indeed all on one invoice and job number.
Just about the same as when a potential client asks for and receives a price for 250 shirts printed with a company logo and a team name, and then reveals that is actually ten different team names, each printed on 25 shirts. Same order, very different pricing, with the 250 identical logo prints priced accordingly.
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

This is how we tend to handle it most of the time. We cover the extra setup time, but overall art and customer service time is less than 2 orders so they get a break for economies of scale. We never decide for a client, though we do sometimes suggest it as an option if they are doing a wide range of styles and sizes. We will typically do youth and ladies as one, and unisex as another larger size, or split it XS to medium or large, then large or xl to 3x or 4x etc.

Just to add, we usually scale for a large unisex, normal fronts are 10" wide, sometimes more if it has background elements that can curve under the arms without obstructing the main design elements or text. 10" will usually fit on everytjing from a 3t or 4t up, though it looks stupid on those small sizes of course. We never would scale it to properly fit on those tiny shirts and have the art look comically tiny on a 3x instead, if that makes sense. Kids don't really care what they wear, adults do.

Here, it's automatically 2 separate jobs, 2 sets of screens, and priced at the quantity of each order. Just quoted one contract job this morning; 99 shirts, but 33 youth and 66 adult, 1/1. 4 total screens, the youth are $3.90, the adults $3.00. If it was 99 with the same images, then $2.00 per shirt and 2 screens. As printers, we don't save a penny, so they should pay normal rates.

Camps and Coaches . Happens a lot. Different shirt colors, graphics, and sometimes ink changes. Little Johnny needs an extra small. Coaches may need a double x or more. Guess what? They can often want the same price across the board. IMO it all comes down to an informed sales staff or owner. Break it down or walk away and let someone else stumble. 144 is not always the number! Different sized graphics are costly if not figured in to the mix. Some sales people just bundle it up, letting production to figure it out.

What Tony says above, get all the info, and inform of all the charges, then give some suggestions on reducing them. Then get a deposit, or walk away.

Many of us are confronted with this issue. If the customer only wants to pay for one size graphic, then they will have to understand that the Little Johnnys graphic may look silly on something much, much larger. Same with womens/mens. As a side note, cuts  and seams can get in the way. Sometimes it is a budget issue. Personally, I do not see why the decorator has to take the fall when everything has been explained well.
Sometimes they do. Get it all up front is all I can say.

Just no way I'd give away a reduced graphic at same quantity break, 144 pcs split with 2 art sizes and only charge for "extra screens", there's a lot more to doing that then just a set of screens. In my mind there's no reason to set a bad precedent.  If client can do this whenever they want suddenly you are working more for less all the time.

It's another thing if you do not foresee this issue prior to taking the order and advise your client poorly, backpedaling at that point is poor service.  This is a top priority in my office for sales people and artists, understand the restrictions of the garments, if unsure go to shop and check with production yourself, better safe than sorry then have to give away extra labor due to improper planning.

Well put! Often overlooked is the "Well, they are a good customer." However once you break your own rules, it can be difficult to bring them back. Favors are not always appreciated nor understood.
