setting up an auto in a mobile work trailer
« on: March 28, 2019, 10:17:29 AM »
Has anyone set up shop in a mobile unit? I may be moving and there is a modular work space available. It is 75' long x 28'. There is plenty of room for 2 (6 color) autos. I am concerned with the weight though. This is a similar company. http://www.usamobileoffices.com/Acton-MA-mobile-offices.php Has anyone done this? Anything that I need to know?
Thanks.

is this something you want to move ? or would it just be stationary?

personally, just seeing the single axle... I would not...maybe there is a weight rating for these mobile units?

It will be permanent. It is on the same property. My landlord will give me a great deal and pay the cost of moving because someone else really wants my building and is willing to pay double! I have a lease for 2 more years but I am willing to move if we can work it out.

We have been trying to get one of these made for over a year. If you are looking to go to events to print, look deeply into the money side of things. The merch companies that sell at events have things pretty locked down. I have a lot more info, but if you are not looking at going to festivals/events then I won't bore you.

New Buffalo Shirt had/(I think still has) one with a modified M&R in it. He said he would go to Bonaroo and make a killing! Apparently upkeep/maintenance is nearly cost prohibitive last I heard. You can maybe google a image of it, if I can find the pics I had on a old computer I'll post them.

Hopefully I'll never have to grow up and get a real job...

Not only the axles for this unit but you would also look at the floor is it 3/4 plywood and 2x6 floor joist, I worked in the mobile home biz for years, so how much weight on the floor is very important to what the floor is made of and how. Oh and if your in Florida there is a zone you need to have on the mobile unit.

I bought a press at auction off of New Buffalo,

They had a custom trailer with a G2 in it, that was modified to have fold up arms. It was quote an impressive setup, fully contained with generators , compressors, and everything you need to run at an event.

If I were going to move it, yeah a trailer would make sense but if it is stationary I would look for a shop.

Can I get this info? I have a buddy starting to modify a bread truck for printing at events. I might go in with him on it.

Jon at New Buffalo still has their rig..... Just needs some updates as we've all talked about putting it back on the tour...... IMO though it would be much better off if you had a badass DTG setup there where you can do variable data for people........ Example would be printing a 1 of 500, 2 of 500, etc as it would be easily done on a good dtg.

I don't think he is talking about a trailer since it is 75 feet by 28 feet but more like a double wide.

If you can put it on a legit foundation and you reinforce the subfloor x2 or 3 you should be okay right??!!. Those joists should be able to handle some weight. If ifs the only option, eff it why not. I'd give it a whirl. A little redneck but whatev... LOL! I had thought about moving to an island off VA for a sec since I have a house there. Zero commercial bldgs so this ran though my head for a sec. Doesnt sound too crazy but I would definitely reinforce the sub floor... the manufactured homes I have seen are made with the thinnest, crappiest OSB available. Not suitable for a ceramic tile install let alone an auto. I think if you lay down extra sub you'll be good. If you do this... I want pics!

This is certainly staying in 1 spot with 3ph/440 power and 1000 amp panel. It is no joke. I am in a 60 x 40 steel building now. My lease is up in 2 years. A larger construction company with really deep pockets wants 3 acres of out door storage with a small (for them) repair facility. They already have 10K feet on the same property. They are willing to pay for me to move and make it all happen. They are even talking about plumbing air from their air compressors to my building so I don't have to listen to the noise any more. I guess the real question is the floor. I will check on that or see about supporting from underneath. It all depends on them and if the landlord is willing to shuffle this many things around. I should know by the end of april...

Yeah I see what your talking about now. Honestly if the structure has good power, water, draining,/sewage, etc  it shouldn’t matter what it is or originally built for. If it makes sense for your business plan/model then if floors can support running equipment and it has all the basics needed above you should be good to go. I saw a YouTube recently of a really nice m&r setup a company did in a couple storage containers placed side by side. But if you have 1000 amps and 3 phase power will never be an issue. What’s the water/drains/sewage? Do you have natural gas out there?
