I know there are a lot of systems out there and we currently use Vastex. What do you use?

I'm sure it isn't the answer you're looking for, especially since my quantities nowadays are better served by heat seal, but some years back, when screen printing was called for, rather than a specialized press, I just had a few dedicated screens and used paper stencils similar to these

I've made my own paper stencils using stahls numbers, I have friend that swears by his number printing machine, we just don't have the volume now days as we don't go after that type work, but when we do heat seal numbers all the way, unless I have to match a color.

We have an Inline Technologies, we do a fair amount, but we will also use transfers for 2 color numbers for long runs, it's just faster.

I have switched to Transfer Express for numbering jobs. Many options for style/size/color and also able to order individual names.

I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who has used the Vastex, Inline, and Brown systems. How do they compare? Anything better out there that you have tried on the print side?

If you are doing a lot of numbering I would get a Abacus 2

Both the questions you pose are wide open - You might want to consider  a number of variables, some of which have been mentioned,

What is your present demand for #s ?
the sizes you intend to print - 3,4 6,8,10 and 12" ?
How many different styles ?
Does a number printing system or press best fit my needs?
Space required for press and screens...
# of colors ? Projected labor cost ?
Increase in market ?
Budget

You'll need to have a good grasp of the number segment and an understanding of its
complexity and difficulty. Depending where you stand now, it may be best to carefully figure what do I need to grow this business and perhaps get additional input.

What is the benefit of a numbering system over the many transferable options on the market today?

While it's been a while since I've worked with vinyl or transfers, and there have been improvements...when at Riddell the four reasons we printed most numbers were:
1.it was the most cost efficient method,
2.when printing team uniforms you would have a good color match with mascots, names and sleeves,
3.easier to make/match school colors and could be made more vibrant(usually more ink)
4.never worried about adhesion and seldom about bleed
As with any apparel decorating, properly trained personnel is critical.
