Hard drive acess
« on: January 23, 2018, 01:09:09 PM »
I have an old 98 hard drive I'd like to look in and get some old art out, is it possible to to just use it as a slave drive on an XP,win7 or 10 system since I have all 3.... thanks in advance for the help.

Shouldn't be an issue. Drive itself might have a select jumper on it to set it to slave.
Make sure you do that otherwise it will try and boot from it.

98 was a long time ago, hope that bad boy still spins!

better yet I would see if I could get an external hard drive dock for cheap online and go that route.  I have 2 or 3 here and it makes it so easy to check out old drives.

We bought a dock for about $15 a few years ago. It turns any HD into an external basically.

I think the jumper still has to be set for a slave, even with the docking box (station, w/e).

I'd imagine most docks would be sata as opposed to ide though.

Probably harder to find a IDE dock/external encloser these days. Not that its impossible but not on the shelf at Best Buy or something I suspect.

This is what I have - has an IDE adapter.  Several come with adapters but yea IDE is going to die off completely very soon.

They sell IDE/SATA to USB adapters on Amazon for pretty cheap.

You can always find what you want online...if you look hard enough you can get 3.5 floppy drives...i bet you can find the disks still.
