Conversion Help
« on: November 16, 2011, 04:11:22 PM »
I have an AI file that I can't open because the version of Corel (12) I am running is too old.  Could someone convert this file for me?  Please let me know and I will send it to you.

Thanks

Wade

I am game too if you need it. Not good with Corel, but I do have and should be able to make it work . . .

What I usually do is open in AI and save out as EPS which usually imports into Corel.

I'm game too.  If needed you can send to me.

Thanks for all the offers to help.  Brad took care of it for me but I will keep all of you in mind when I have this problem again.  What I really need to do is just break down and get Corel X5.

Even the newest versions of CorelDRAW do not always open Illy files that were not made and saved correctly and therefore compatibly. Fluid recently touched upon this problem with some Illy files.

I have no personal experience with X5, and would want some feedback first myself. I'm not so sure that it is a lock on these files.
I do believe that you do want at least X3 though. It was the single biggest jump in the line.

Richard, a little insight?

And X5 is awful.  X4 is much better.

You might want to break down and buy a copy of AI.  I think most of the time, you can open newer AI files with an older version of AI.

You can also import PDF's with fonts better through AI

The general trick for this is to save the Illy file as a pdf or .eps, then "Place" (import) the file into a new document; go to the object menu and use "Flatten Transparency" and make the the convert text to outlines is checked.  This is in Illustrator...
I made a mistake once; I thought I was wrong about something; I wasn't

CorelDRAW versions prior to X3 & X4 are way too old to be dealing with any of the CS versions of Illustrator.  X5 is out yet I still use X4 ONLY due to a ton of macros that I have and use have not been updated to X5 yet. Some are commercial yet most are my own custom and I haven't had to time to update the VBA code.

I would HIGHLY suggest looking at at least upgrading to X4.  X5 deals with Illy files a lot better than X4 though and I would guess due to release dates from X5 that the next new version of DRAW will be coming soon.

It is possible the file you have was saved with compression on. If this is the case you WILL NOT get it into your version of DRAW without the help of someone with a higher version of DRAW who can save down after opening the file.

CorelDRAW V12 is seriously out dated and lacks a ton of awesome new features as well as a lot of old bugs removed and fixed. Upgrade if you can. Upgrade price is only $195 US, I believe which is honestly not that much.

If you still need help with the file I will convert it for you. Only problem is I am heading out of town around 3 AM and will not return until late Saturday night.  If you need it fast please send it to me now. If it can wait until Sunday let me know and I will get it to you then
