attach fan/vac to MH light box?
« on: June 22, 2017, 10:56:41 AM »
Pretty standard old setup. intake vents on the short ends, exit vents (facing up?) on the long sides.

Unit gets pretty hot, makes the glass and rubber and screen too hot. What are my best options for getting it cooler and not damaging the bulb?

the heat rising, as it must of course, is the problem, I'm not sure there is an easy answer, but is there any way at all you could flip the table and dismantle and  mount the light above it? The light does not really need to have the shroud around it, none of mine ever have, going way back...

Yep, it's that shroud that's keeping the heat in (assuming that it doesn't also act as a reflector).
Adding a fan could make it like a vacuum cleaner chamber if you're not careful.
Old school custom car dudes would have it louvered.
Heck, they even louver trunks!
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

the shroud is painted black inside, it's just a "don't burn your eyes" trap.
we could take it out an put a skirt around the edges in it's stead, that would be a little bit of help.

"contained" units (not open frame like this) will have the same issue, is it just a matter of putting the right fans in the right places?

Could you add a small intake fan to one side, and outtake fan to the other, to keep air flowing, and heat always moving out?

You do not want the heat deflectors on this design.  Remove those.

Also, you can add an HF1 Exhaust fan to get the heat away also.  Are you sure the internal fans are working on each end.

As always, please do not hesitate to call me direct anytime.  Always great talking to you

solution for now is - avoiding the cost, hassle, and potential downsides of a fan - deleted the shroud and taped a 30" strip of white vinyl around the edge of the glass to make a breathable skirt. my light box is going commando.

thanks go out especially to doug at douthitt!
