The rods were each held in a clamp on a ratchet, and had a one minute timer operating the solenoid that pulled them apart to make the gap. As the rods burned down, the timer would shut off the solenoid, the ratchet would reset, the solenoid would turn back on and pull them apart with the reset gap. Wash and repeat.
