Usually technique and practice.
If you do see drips or other excess deposits on the edge, scrape 'em down with a piece of cardboard or an old credit card. You don't want them there at the end.

Some of our coaters seem designed to produce drips! I second Frog's advice, but I use the rounded corner one of those 3"x4" hard plastic squeegees. (I use those to push emulsion out of the coater back into the bucket, too.)

I had that issue with the monster max scoop coater. I don't even use it anymore. I use an AWT scoop coater now and never have any issues with drips or thick lines on the side of the screen.
