What program do I need to get to open a dam docx file cs3 makes claim it will but won't, did I say I hate getting docx files

Will open just about anything the MS programs put out.

Yep, OpenOffice opens most without a problem. You can save them to pdf when you print, then try to place them in Illustrator.

Yep. it's a doc file from Word 2007 on, and Open Office is way cheaper than Microsoft Office

If you already have an older version of MS Word you can get a converter from Microsoft. You can open them but not save them in docx.

honestly i gave up.
open office is great, but if custys are making art in Word, there's nothing better than Word to open it up. MS word does funky things to make art functional within itself and I have never found a reader that honestly showed what was created on the other end 100% of the time. just grabbed the stupid subscriptions service so i can be sure. but i still use open office writer and calc when building my own stuff.

Well now I'm just curious.  I have MS Office 2010 and I'd love to see what in the world they could do in Office.

I sent an IM with my email address if you would send me a copy.

Years back I did have one custy send me a Word file and all it had was a silly MS Splat image.

My version of Microsoft Office was 2008, which stopped working altogether after a certain OS X upgrade. Open Office has worked on all of the Word files we've received (hardly any, fortunately) which we would then save to PDF so we could place it in Illustrator, which converts the text to outlines/curves/vector, whatever you want to call it. Or, as SP said, just get MS Word...

Any clients that try to send me "art" in .doc or .docx format are asked to save the file as a .pdf before sending it to me.
