M&R CTS Online Protection
« on: February 07, 2017, 10:56:20 PM »
Hey All,

I apologize in advance for asking this but after searching I did not see any answers. And the past several weeks I am dealing with serious family medical issues and other things so operating on zero sleep. Been this way for awhile now. Getting used to it. Not fun. So anyway, new CTS from M&R is here, set up, running, works great. Very similar to our existing files and work flow. Had it 24 hours all good screens ready to go.

So.... it is on our network and hooked up to the internet but it has it's own Windows box on the CTS unit itself. Not getting into the Windows / Apple / Android thing I don't care about that I am asking / curious about Windows Updates plus firewall plus getting a Malware Bytes / Antivirus set up on there.

Since we are 24 hours new to this what are you doing? And I am talking about the Windows machine on the CTS unit itself not the shop. Regarding both Malware / Antivirus and Windows Updates. If you have answers for either or both I appreciate it.

Thanks!

Oh, and it's Windows so you have options for Defender or doing your own firewall.

Or just disconnect from internet and just turn on for any tech needs such as remote access? Maybe best bet?

The Tech more than likely has or should have set the computer up to NOT auto update. There are updates that seem harmless and typically are, but can sometimes, toss in a wrench. Once, I had a customer that had Adobe Distiller do an auto update that the RIP didn't play well with. Deleted the update, and all was fine.  Alex Wisniewski is your best contact for how to best set the PC up after the install (for any changes you might want to make to the pc and how that might affect the programs if at all). Not to be confused with Alex Mammoser. Two very different guys. When someone gives you a technical answer, they are getting it from Wisniewski. ;)

I've had plenty of customers install and run malware programs in the background that had not affected anything. Just make sure to turn them off when updating any programs. For the most part, most screen room's don't get access to the outside internet. How the shops set that up, You'd have to ask and IT person or one of the PC tech savvy members on here. You really just need a network system setup unless you are sending files via a google drive, dropbox or something and that's not as efficient as a network transfer.

Thanks Dan! And Eric too for the texts.

Yup, feel much safer doing the disconnect and having the files sent over the network from our safe box.

Emailing or Dropboxing them in seems all fun and cool but just safer and better protocol anyway from our box and it's dedicated seps folder.

Make sense now.

Thanks M&R!

If the CTS is on a Window box, and the box is on your local network, you can just disable any internet access on that box.
You can change the settings on your router to restrict the device via MAC address or a static IP.

But, remember, if the device is on a network with other devices that are on the internet, you are only as safe as the other devices.
