So the missus wants a 2 color foil job for our fanwear retail store.

I was thinking of direct printing the first pass of foil adhesive like usual and pressing the first color of foil.

Then puzzle piecing in the adhesive on a cold peel transfer for the 2nd color of foil, press, peel the paper and apply the foil.

Do any of you do this? Is it just a BAD idea?

I tried googling it, but it was too complicated to word effectively. I'm willing to bet someone here has tried this. I'm not afraid of powder for adhering the adhesive layer.

But if it weren't for BAD IDEAS, sometimes I might go a whole day or two without ANY ideas at all. ???

I think it will work, assuming the art isn't too crazy.  I don't think the foil will stick to itself, but it might.  I have done multiple colors of foil before, but they have always been super easy, like top word one color, bottom another, or like a single star or heart a different color from the rest, so I can just manually line up and press all the foil at once.  How complex is the art?

I think the first layer of foil will dull if hit again as well?

Yes Mimosa, I've done multi-color foil jobs that way too....it just won't work on every job.

The art is quite simple, but the 2nd foil pass WILL have to overlap the previously foiled element. It's medium sized, blocky spot colors with distressing (or vintage) and it is designed with about a 1/4 inch "knockout" for the inner letters of constrasting foil to fit inside of.

I tried to attach a jpg from two different browsers. Can't do it for whatever reason.  :(

I can tell you Tony pepitone has done several multi color foil jobs. Maybe he will chime in on this one.

Yes ffokazak. Foil does dull on subsequent trips through the drier, but in my experience, it's minimal.

And Rick, I'm not surprised Tony has done this. I just wonder about transferring the adhesive...and then getting good performance from it.

I guess it would be easy enough to test.

  • Ain't no shortcuts in screen printing.
What about printing the adhesive on to the foil? Foil transfers. I have used this method, although not for multi-color. The foil needs to be able to withstand the trip down dryer tunnel. I used Crown foil.

Hi Guys. Sorry about being not too active here lately however theres not much need to answer questions and queries that others can offer here.
With regards to foil transfers I have no experience.....therefore nothing to offer on that. Multicolor foil? That's graphic specific.
