Do you think this compressor is a good match for a gauntlet 6/8 press?

What does M&R give as the required specs?
That rug really tied the room together, did it not?

it's too small. Look for at least a 5hp compressor.

The hp is small. I have a 5hp compressor now that doesn't put out that much cfm.

This is new to me, I thought I could get away with this guy. Saw it as a package deal with a chiller used.

Tractor Supply has a decent 7.5 single phase in the 1300.00 range that is perfect for a small gauntlet.

5hp rotary screw, or 7.5hp piston...

a 5hp piston would be basically running constantly... which will reduce the life of the compressor head (and add a ton of heat that your chiller would need to remove)

the rotary screws are built (and like) to run constantly.

I had a "5hp" ( yes air quotes)  tractor supply/ Sears  quality level running my sportsman 6 colour ,It ran hot and  after blowing it up I switched to a true 5hp commercial and never had any issue it ran cooler and better , it was single phase but drew more amps and needed a starter. When I moved too an area with 3phase I bought a rotary screw KAESER and its even better.

If you buy a piston style compressor.... consider a two stage machine. Preferably, one with a contactor that makes and breaks the motor current (using the air pressure switch is sub-par).

Additionally, most shops will use a refrigerated air dryer to pull the moisture out of their compressed air, to help avoid cylinder failures on the press.

I also ran a 5hp temporarily during a move. It ran constantly with my old
Gauntlet. Another thing to consider is that (especially) with an older Gauntlet
there will be air leaks keeping a 5 compressor running all the time unless
all of the air lines and mac valves have been replaced.

Yes, a chiller is a must...our machine tech was in yesterday and told me about the shop down the road that never drained their tank and finally started running water into the press.

So they ended up turning a pneumatic press into a hydro-aulic one.  EVERYTHING had to get replaced.  They had water squirting out of the stroke cylinders.

And don't forget to drain your tank.
