Thanx to Winston, we finally figured out the root of the dryer problems. Our 8ft heating section has a 500,000 BTU burner instead of the 250,000. That in part also explains why we were able to get more out of our dryer than other MD-8 users.

Yes, we've won our share of awards, and yes, I've tested stuff and read the scientific papers, but ultimately take everything I say with more than just a grain of salt! So if you are looking for trouble, just do as I say or even better, do something I said years ago!

But doesn't explain how you weren't using twice as much gas!  Unless I have no clue what I'm talking about when it comes to burners, which is likely the case.

just means that 500k btu was likely causing wider temperature swings than a 250k btu... when it was full on, it would put out 2x more heat... but that doesn't mean that it's ALWAYS consuming 2x more gas than the 250k.

you generally want the burner section sized for the area of cubic feet your are trying to heat/warm.

this is the reason why furnaces and A/C units are sized based on the square footage of your home.

Makes sense, I wonder if the dryer was bigger at some point in its life.

A printer just gave me a call about this thread, so I will try and respond!
The MD-8 should use about 100,000 btus per hour plus or minus in most situations which is roughly 1 gal of gas.
That being said, you will use no more gas on a 500,000 btu burner than a 250,000btu burner. The Maxon Airflow Burner Is
A Simple Bulletproof burner. It has a Turn Down Ratio of about 30 to 1, so it would stay on  at the Max btu Level devided by 30
Much less than either burner with be used to maintain the 100,000 btus. The difference is the larger would come up to desired temp faster,
and would power more drone sections if needed. Different/larger piping/pressures should be used to take care of the volume of gas needed
on a wide open setting.
