Antec Legend - first impressions
« on: April 28, 2015, 04:00:01 PM »
I just got in a new Antec Legend 6/6. I'm using 16x20 aluminum pallets, and have the slider pallet adapters for auto compatibility. So far I'm pretty impressed. It is super light! I had a Vastex V2000 and Anatol Thunder (both very good presses), but this is real light and spins like nothing. The micros are really nice and predictable. Same linear style as the aforementioned presses, but it seems like they move better. Could be my imagination though as they all move the same. The floating heads with the dual point registration seems to be some real nice technology. I just ran a 150 piece, 3 color job with underbase and registration hasn't budged. It also has a smaller foot print which is nice for floor space.

After sale support is right there also. Dave called me up to see how I liked it. I mentioned I was using auto screens (23x31) and they seem to be just barely holding them up. He told me no problem, I'm sending another set of springs to you today to support the weight (the head currently has 2 springs and can take up to 4). No hassle, no charge, no fuss.

What was wrong with the other two presses, seem like your going thru a few presses?, Antec does how ever make very nice press even the old ones are still solid machines.

Nothing was wrong with the Vastex. Still think the V2000 is one of the best manual presses out there. I picked up a Anatol thunder 8/8 on the used market for the better auto compatibility. The Anatol did need some TLC to get through some issues, but that comes with the used market. I later decided it took up to my shop space at 10'6". The price tag of the Kruzer had me thinking of getting rid of the Anatol for something with a smaller footprint. Then I decided if I'm going to buy something, not to limit myself for price and just get what I want. I originally had the Legend ruled out, by my recent switch to Shur-Loc EZ frames put it back in the running.

Congrats. Mine is over 20 years old and still kicking some serious a$$.
Love the ease of spinning the press.

Glad you like it. They really are nice presses. If you think spinning 16x20 aluminum pallets is light, you would think spinning wood pallets would lift the press off the ground like a helicopter!

Our first legend we bought used from Dave waaay back in 2007, he's a great guy and always there if you need him.

Old thread I know,

But can you update the lasting impression a year and a bit on? I dredged this thread up because you say you're specifically using 23X31" frames. I'm experienced on a few solid presses, but this one is the one raved about online by experienced and skilled printers so it's worthwhile investigating now I'm tentatively looking to buy another manual press.

I personally call the M&R Chameleon the industry champ. I don't like everything about it but I like it. It's heavy, solid, dependable and reliable. The Vastex V2000HD I'd call the equal to the chameleon but for sideclamps. I've never got to use a V2000 with sideclamps.

I want to solely use 23X31" frames. Will the legend handle these (with the additional springs by the looks of the original post) and just the back clamp alone? I'm going to have good solid registration, reliably, while using this screen size? I used this frame size in my V2000HD with back clamp and it was alright, a bit bouncy up the front away from the clamp as expected and I'm assuming the legend will produce the same result? I noticed with the V2000 that there was a bit of everything going on with this frame size though, screen flex and the weight flexing the printhead slightly.

My pet peeve really is palette deflection. I like the rigidity of the V2000 and the chameleon palette arms there. Neither moves if you're using a bit more pressure than normal. The legend uses the long adjustable stay to add some rigidity into the ali palette arms, is that stay enough to hold it pretty solid? In comparison to the chameleon and V2000?

I'm looking hard at this particular press and also the Elite 2 from Ranar. The ranar press looks to be of solid build quality and has a favorable price point, the Legend seems to have some interesting engineering and may be better to swing around for my aging shoulders. The legend also has the benefit of industry appreciation, I've not found a bad review of this press which probably speaks for itself really. But you know, I should be asking..

Am I going to get away with printing large, multi colour image sizes with 23X31" frames on an Antec Legend with a back clamp, or would I be better off with a chameleon with sideclamps?
