ideas for a 97 gauntlet S
« on: August 25, 2016, 09:53:09 AM »
We have an old M&R 6/8 ALL air Gauntlet S. I've tried to sell this press on and off for the past two years, with anyone interested backing out at the last minute.

So it's just sitting in a back warehouse collecting dust.

Any thoughts of what I can use it for? It's a giant pain to set up screens quickly, and it doesn't work with a standard trilock.

What could I be printing with it?

the all airs back then don't do well with DC.. the same MAC valve controls squeegee and stroke.. very hard to get a hard even stroke as it will stall out. You would have to upgrade the stroke cylinder, easy if you know how to order a Bimba cylinder. Re-do some of the air line as they used a 1 in and under-over to feed the other side.. caused lag and the notorious lean of the sq/fl bad holders.

remove all the heads and modify it into a tagging machine somehow.

I pretty much reconditioned ours, new reg gates and bearings, new clevis fork, mac valves, etc., etc., replaced all the sq chopper cyls, stroke cyls on ours years ago and it handles wb/dc just fine.   Yes, you are limited on airheads like this on the stroke speed/pressure and won't be able to set that optimally due to the the stuttering jsheridan mentioned but it's manageable.  The biggest thing is a 2x stroke is slow, even with fine tuning the table up cyl and running full bore on the flood because these machines table all the way down/up to 2x stroke.

Parts for this era of machine are getting expensive, M&R appears to be phasing them out by deterrence on purchasing parts, but still a crazy deal even if you do have to overpay for some things.  If I tally up all I put into this press plus what we paid it's still an amazing deal compared to what we have made with it.
