The words “vinyl” and “film” are both commonly used when referring to heat transfer material. But although these terms are often used interchangeably, there is a distinction.
Technically, vinyl implies a PVC (polyvinyl chloride) composition, which is not safe for use on childrenswear or laser cutting. Vinyl can have a negative connotation to consumers, as well as being an “old school” reference.
While “heat transfer vinyl” has become somewhat of a generic classification, there are relatively few of these materials today that are truly vinyl; this makes “film” or “flex” more accurate and less pejorative alternatives for describing them.
