Brown/Harco UC4820 Dryer Issues
« on: May 14, 2016, 05:51:23 PM »
Naturally, after getting a brand new auto, I am now having issues with my dryer.  Today, I noticed that the heat wasn't consistent and I've never had an issue before.  After letting the dryer cool down and attempting to diagnose, I believe I found what is happened, but not sure what part is causing it, and wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar issue in the past?

When I start the dryer, the heating elements all come on and the temperature starts to rise.  Once it reaches the set temperature, the dryer begins to have an issue cycling on and off, the indicator lights (1-8) flash erratically and the temperature is not consistent, or rather its lower than it should be and varies 10-20 degrees.

I believe it has to do with the thermostat inside the dryer or another component that tells the elements to cycle on/off to maintain temperature and have reached out to Brown for parts but if it's something normal that I can replace locally that would be great as I'm in the middle of trying to get some jobs out.

Thanks!

We experienced that exact issue a couple years ago.
We were able to resolve it by running the AutoTune function on the controller.

Mine is quite a bit older, so I'm not sure of that function, this dryer just has a basic control with temperature up and down.  After opening it up, I believe it's going to either be the control itself or the computer board, which im currently leaning towards since the temperature is displayed properly on the control, etc.

Possible the thermo couple probe could be also.

As the 3rd generation in a company it always makes me smile to see posts like these!! That dryer is pre 1992, as early as 1982  and still in service today! There is only a couple of manufacturers that can claim longevity and quality like that! I would be proud to help you direct with your issues to make sure in 30 years we can have the same quality reputation.  My direct line to help with your issue 616-560-3516.  Thanks

Thank you Steve for reaching out, the dryer seems to be working properly today, and after running the tests you mentioned I have narrowed it down to being a power issue that I didn't notice from the utility side coming in, or the possibility that some of the controls are overheating, it is fairly clean inside but im going to remove the cover and remove what little lint is around the heatsink.  It started acting up on Sunday but I put a fan blowing in on the outside of the cooling fan and it went back to normal.  Hopefully I won't need any parts but will give you guys a call if I can't seem to get it working consistently.

Thanks again for the excellent service!
