Scoop Coater cutting screen

I am brand new, I started coating my screens with emulsion tonight. First screen was perfect, but the second and third screens I tried were a disaster. My first pass with emulsion and POP! Could my coater be defective or do I have some new found strength and I'm just pushing too hard? Aluminum edges of my coater seen a little sharp, but I wouldn't know what is normal feels like! Please help?

Either you're pressing way too hard. ( doubt this is the problem )...or

This sounds like your coater. Sand down just the end edges a bit and you should be OK.

Ouch! You will never forget this, or let it happen again; a crappy way to learn, but I'll bet it's burned into your head pretty well. It wasn't a dumb thing either, you just hadn't seen it yet, I bet most here have a ton of stories like this... welcome aboard the happy world of t-shirt screenprinting... and yes, buff those corner edges down...

Dropped a coater once, forgot about it and next time I went to coat....RIIIIPPPPP.  Turns out the cap had shifted and the edge of the trough tore right through the mesh.  Now I always do a quick check, and have sanded lightly any areas that could cause that again.

All the above, also, run your finger along the whole edge to check for burrs.

I ripped the first screen I ever coated with a plastic cap coater. Rounded the corners and ripped the next one....

Get an AWT dual edge coated and be done with that problem.

I ripped one screen only by coating.

But.... ive put a pair of scissors through a 4 pack of screens when i tripped going to cut the plastic off of them...  I never use scissors anywhere near screens now...

Definitely sand the edge of the metal caps down and the where the coating edge meets the end cap as suggested above, run your finger across and ensure that you don't feel any sharp edges.  Also I would Contact the company whom you bought it from and ask for a replacement screen for the issues.

I put haze remover on about 10 screens, then took a phone call, LOL...

  Alson when sanding, use a fine grit (300+) or you could make it worse. Be sure
to wipe it clean before using.
