Max image size for 23x31 frame?
« on: February 02, 2016, 11:46:59 AM »
I'm going to be printing a fine art edition in a week or so. In the past I've printed these with 30x40 Newmans, but was curious if anyone prints 18x24 ish prints with 23x31's. My image area will be slightly less than 17x23. My initial thought is that it's too big for the 23x31's but I thought I'd ask if anyone else has tried it.

You can get away with it, if the art allows on the edges.  I have had some issues printing by hand and getting a nice crisp line on the edge with a 23x31.  Thats why I just make them 16x20

IMHO using larger screens and keeping image area around 50-60% of the mesh area makes registration orders of magnitude easier.
Are you doing multicolor?  Does that even matter?

It is a bit tougher to print even a one color--print bed needs to be very flat, OC has to be set evenly and low, etc.
Good challenge, if nothing else.  :)

For 18x24 I use 25x36 minimum, and honestly that can be a bit of problem on some art.  What I have always read, and it seems to hold true in practice is you want the image to be 2-3 inches from the inside of the frame.  Most frames are around 1.5-2 inches square, so lets say on a 23x31 you would end up with a max width of around 16 inches and height of 24.  Ideally you want more space though or straight lines will begin to distort in the corners.

Thanks for the input, I'll stick with the 30x40's.

We advertise 15x15 as our max image, this generally allows us to print 16x18 without problems, if the shirt will accept it, when customers forget the little star element in the upper right corner,

"You mean that little star counts  too?" sound familiar when they are submitting orders with just a few 2-4's for the coach's kid.

Easier to just print the bigger image than argue about it being 1 inch too large, 23 x 31 will accept the 16x18 for most art on an auto.
